Hearts head coach Wouter Vrancken has expressed strong confidence that striker Claudio Braga will remain at Tynecastle when the transfer window closes on Thursday, suggesting another full season in Edinburgh could ultimately boost the forward's prospects of securing a bigger move in the future.
Speaking ahead of the transfer deadline, Vrancken was asked directly whether the 26-year-old Portuguese forward would still be on Hearts' books once the window shuts. The Belgian coach responded with a light-hearted but firm assurance.
"I think he will be here. I'll bet on this," Vrancken said, before adding a note of caution given the unpredictable nature of deadline day. "But you never know, so let's hope that we can keep him because he has a lot of value for the team."
Braga arrived at Hearts from Norway's second tier and enjoyed an impressive debut campaign, netting 17 goals. This season has seen a slower start in terms of output, with the striker registering two goals and three assists across 10 appearances, though his overall contribution to the team's play has not gone unnoticed by his manager.
Vrancken was full of praise for Braga's attitude and footballing intelligence, describing qualities that go beyond raw statistics. "He's important because he has quality," the head coach said. "He is also coachable and thinks about the team. He has the mindset that the team is the most important thing. For me, that's an extra reason to want to keep him."
The Hearts boss also outlined why staying at Tynecastle for a second season could actually work in Braga's favour, particularly if he wants to attract interest from clubs higher up the football pyramid. According to Vrancken, top clubs are wary of players who produce a single standout season within one tactical system, preferring proof of consistency and adaptability.
"It can be a good thing for him to stay and show himself in a different style of play because the bigger teams are not looking for a player who does one good year in a certain style of play," Vrancken explained. "I think when you can show yourself, that it's not a lucky shot, he is consistent in quality and he can show himself in different ways of playing and in different positions, then it adds to his personality or to his abilities as a player and I think the range of clubs will be bigger."
The comments come amid a summer of significant upheaval at Hearts, who have undergone a major squad overhaul under Vrancken's leadership. The Belgian took charge following Derek McInnes' departure and has already overseen 14 incoming signings against 12 departures as he reshapes the squad to fit his vision.
Despite the extensive rebuilding already completed, Vrancken made clear that nothing can be taken for granted until the transfer window officially shuts, hinting that further business – in either direction – remains a possibility right up to the deadline.
"I would never say settled because I know what can happen in the last seconds of such a window," he said, referring to any late developments before Thursday's deadline. "We are discussing possibilities all the time, incoming, outgoing."
Hearts are due to face rivals Hibernian in an Edinburgh derby at Easter Road on the day the transfer window closes, giving Vrancken and his squad plenty to focus on beyond the speculation surrounding Braga's future.
