Ebbsfleet United have been given the green light to return to action this weekend after the National League lifted a suspension that had forced the club to postpone its opening six fixtures of the season.
The Kent-based club, competing in the National League South, had been sidelined while working to resolve serious financial problems. Those issues escalated to the point where HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) filed a winding-up petition against the club over unpaid debts dating back to April.
The situation shifted last month when businessman John O'Leary completed a takeover of Ebbsfleet. The change in ownership provided the funds needed to settle the club's outstanding obligations, including full payment to HMRC and to the playing squad.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the club expressed gratitude to those who stood by them during the turbulent period. "We would like to thank everyone for their patience and understanding, as well as our players and staff for their exemplary conduct through this difficult period," Ebbsfleet said.
Earlier in the week, the club confirmed it had submitted comprehensive documentation to the National League demonstrating that sufficient funds were in place to clear every outstanding liability. HMRC subsequently confirmed there were no remaining amounts owed by the club.
That evidence was reviewed by the National League's compliance and licensing committee, which convened on Tuesday and decided to end the suspension immediately. As a result, Ebbsfleet are set to return to competitive action this Saturday against Walton & Hersham.
The reprieve does not come without consequences, however. The National League has imposed a six-point deduction on the club, though this penalty has been suspended rather than applied outright. That deduction would only take effect if Ebbsfleet fails to meet certain conditions set by the league, which have not yet been made public.
Additionally, the club remains subject to a transfer embargo, meaning it cannot register new players for the time being. The National League made clear that its oversight of the club's affairs is far from over.
"While the committee continues to consider there are issues for the club to satisfy the league on, with regard to compliance with rules and regulations, the committee decided, in accordance with applicable regulations, that the suspension of Ebbsfleet United FC will be lifted with immediate effect," the league said in its statement. "The club remains under a player registration embargo. The committee continues to require specified action from the club and will continue to be in close contact."
The episode has been a turbulent one for supporters of the sixth-tier side, who faced the prospect of a season disrupted before it had properly begun. With six matches already lost to postponement, Ebbsfleet now face a compressed schedule as they look to catch up on missed fixtures while operating under continued financial scrutiny.
The new ownership under O'Leary will be central to restoring stability at the club, both in terms of meeting the league's ongoing demands and reassuring players, staff and fans that the financial turmoil of recent months is firmly in the past. For now, attention turns to Saturday's clash with Walton & Hersham, as Ebbsfleet finally get their delayed campaign under way.
