Sunderland emerged victorious from a dramatic deadline-day scramble with Crystal Palace, securing the signature of Belgium winger Malick Fofana from Lyon in a deal that could rise to £31m, making him the club's record signing.
The saga unfolded on Tuesday when it appeared Fofana, 21, was on the verge of completing a five-year contract at the Stadium of Light. However, the deal took an unexpected turn when Crystal Palace manager Pierre Sage, who previously coached Fofana at Lyon, launched a late attempt to lure the player to Selhurst Park instead. Sage's phone conversation with his former player appeared to sway Fofana's thinking, as he reportedly began leaning towards a reunion with his old manager in south London.
Sunderland, however, were not prepared to let the deal slip away, setting the stage for an unusual and chaotic conclusion to the transfer saga. With both English clubs refusing to back down, Lyon found themselves in the fortunate position of fielding a bidding war, prompting the French club to negotiate improved terms with both suitors. As the fee escalated, so too did the agents' fees and personal terms being offered to the player.
The most striking image of the day came from Lyon airport, where two private jets—one sent by Sunderland, the other by Palace—waited on the tarmac as the two clubs vied for the winger's signature. At one stage, Fofana was reportedly spotted boarding one of the aircraft, sparking speculation he was en route to Newcastle airport to finalize a move to Wearside. In fact, he was travelling to a private hospital in France to undergo a medical that had been jointly arranged by both Sunderland and Palace, reflecting just how tightly contested the situation had become.
With the deadline fast approaching, Sunderland made a decisive final move. Club owner Kyril Louis-Dreyfus flew out to Lyon personally, believed to have used a third private jet, to speak with Fofana directly and remind him of the reasons he had initially been drawn to playing under head coach Régis Le Bris. The intervention proved decisive. Shortly after 9pm, Fofana confirmed he had made his decision and would indeed be moving to Sunderland.
The fee for the winger, who scored 11 goals in 59 appearances for Lyon after joining from Gent in 2024, was initially agreed at £26m, with add-ons expected to push the total to £31m. That fee surpasses the £30m Sunderland paid Strasbourg for midfielder Habib Diarra last summer, confirming Fofana as the club's most expensive signing in its history.
Notably, Fofana had also attracted interest from Arsenal for much of the transfer window, underlining the level of competition Sunderland faced to secure his signature. With a deal sheet now submitted, Sunderland are expected to formally complete the transfer in the coming days, bringing to an end one of the more extraordinary transfer sagas of the summer window.
