Manchester City have secured the signature of Enzo Fernández from Chelsea in a deal worth £125m, matching the British transfer record on a dramatic deadline day that also saw the west London club left scrambling for a replacement.
The Argentina midfielder has signed a five-year contract at the Etihad Stadium, reuniting with Enzo Maresca, who managed him during a spell at Chelsea. The fee ties with the £125m Liverpool paid Newcastle for Alexander Isak a year ago, making Fernández the joint most expensive player in English football history.
City's business did not stop there. The club also completed the signing of Iliman Ndiaye from Everton for a fee that could rise to £65m, further strengthening their attacking options under sporting director Hugo Viana. Including the earlier arrivals of Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest (£116m) and Ayyoub Bouaddi from Lille (£86m), City have now invested £327m in midfield reinforcements this summer alone, as they look to replace the influence lost following Rodri's move to Barcelona, Bernardo Silva's departure to Real Madrid, and Nico González's switch to Newcastle.
Speaking after the move was confirmed, Fernández expressed his excitement at joining a club with City's pedigree. "I could not be happier to be here, and I am ready for the challenge of helping City continue winning trophies. This is a club built for success," he said. "I pride myself on continually improving my game. Anyone who's worked with me will know how hard I train every single day and how much I put into matches. I give absolutely everything and I can promise Manchester City that will continue now I'm here."
For Chelsea, the sale brings an end to a turbulent chapter with Fernández, who had been seeking an exit since March following a fallout after the club's Champions League elimination to Paris Saint-Germain, which led to a two-match ban. His pre-season return was met with jeers from Chelsea supporters during a friendly against Real Sociedad at Stamford Bridge, though he did feature briefly off the bench in the season-opening win over Fulham before being omitted from the next two matchday squads.
Having joined from Benfica for £106.7m in January 2023, Fernández scored 31 goals during his time in west London and helped the club win the Conference League and Club World Cup. However, sources close to Chelsea suggested he had failed to fully embrace his unofficial role as vice-captain, easing the path toward a sale.
Chelsea's attempts to bring in a replacement for Fernández ended in frustration. A £47m agreement with Monaco for Lamine Camara collapsed at the last moment despite a written deal being in place, a move described by sources as "deeply unprofessional" on the French club's part. Chelsea's pursuit of Camara had followed a rejected opening bid of £38.1m and came after Everton's move for USA striker Folarin Balogun broke down, prompting Chelsea to revive interest in the Senegalese midfielder. A separate attempt to renegotiate the Balogun deal for Everton also collapsed after midnight.
Despite losing out on Camara, Chelsea proceeded with the Fernández sale as part of a summer that has generated in the region of £500m through transfers and loans. Other deadline-day activity saw Marc Guiu join RB Leipzig for £16m, while Dário Essugo, Robert Sánchez and Mykhailo Mudryk departed on loan to Strasbourg, Como and Tottenham respectively. Tosin Adarabioyo also completed a permanent move to Spurs.
