Gabriel Jesus has departed Arsenal to sign permanently for Barcelona, bringing an end to a four-year spell in north London on the final day of the summer transfer window. The Spanish champions agreed a deal worth around £8.6m (10m euros) for the Brazilian forward, who has signed a three-year contract at Camp Nou.
The 29-year-old arrived at Arsenal from Manchester City in 2022 for a fee of £45m and went on to make 123 appearances, scoring 32 goals and providing 22 assists. During his time in England, spanning nearly ten years, Jesus won four Premier League titles with City before adding a fifth with Arsenal last season.
His exit follows a gradual decline in playing time at the Emirates Stadium, where persistent injury setbacks and increased competition from Kai Havertz and new arrival Viktor Gyokeres left him with limited opportunities. Jesus made just 14 Premier League appearances last season as Arsenal ended a 22-year wait to be crowned English champions.
Napoli had also registered interest in the striker, but he ultimately opted for a move to Barcelona, who completed his medical on Monday before finalising the switch. Jesus becomes the third player to join the Catalan club from the Premier League this summer, following the earlier arrivals of Anthony Gordon from Newcastle and Rodri from Manchester City.
Speaking to reporters ahead of Arsenal's victory over Aston Villa, manager Mikel Arteta appeared to confirm that Jesus's Arsenal career was effectively over, saying: "Personal situations, whatever they are, I think it's clear."
Arsenal released a statement thanking the forward for his contribution: "We thank Gabby for his contribution to the club during his four years with us and wish him and his family every happiness and success for the future."
Jesus was not the only player to leave the Emirates Stadium on deadline day. Fabio Vieira also completed a permanent transfer to Bundesliga side Hamburg after spending last season on loan there. The Portuguese midfielder, who joined Arsenal from Porto for £34m in 2022, made only five Premier League starts during his time at the club. Speaking to Hamburg's official website, Vieira said: "I'm very happy to be back here. I already know the club, the fans and many of my team-mates, so it feels great to be part of it all again."
Arsenal's deadline day business extended well beyond departures. Gabriel Martinelli was set to complete a £60m move to Saudi Pro League club Al-Hilal, while further transfers were expected to bring financial benefit to the Gunners. Folarin Balogun, who left for Monaco in 2023, was poised to rejoin the Premier League with Everton in a £40m deal, with Arsenal in line for roughly £6.7m in sell-on value. Defender Reuben Norton-Cuffy, who had departed for Genoa last year, was also close to sealing a return to English football with promoted side Hull City in a deal worth around £11.9m.
On the incoming front, Arsenal have been busy strengthening their squad throughout the summer, bringing in Bruno Guimaraes, Ezri Konsa, Christos Tzolis and goalkeeper Illan Meslier, while also converting Piero Hincapie's loan from Bayer Leverkusen into a permanent transfer. The club were also linked with a move for Atletico Madrid's Julian Alvarez, though a deal was considered unlikely before the deadline given Atletico's reluctance to negotiate with domestic rivals.
Despite the volume of squad changes, Arsenal have made a strong start to the new campaign, having already won the Community Shield and taken maximum points from their opening two Premier League fixtures.
