The summer 2026 transfer window closed on September 1 with a flurry of late business across Europe's top five leagues, as clubs finalized loan deals, permanent transfers and free-agent departures before the deadline. According to figures tracked throughout the window, 1,269 deals were completed across the continent's major competitions, with a combined value of £5.9bn.
Arsenal were among the most active clubs on deadline day, though their overall transfer balance for the window stands at a deficit of £149.3m. The Gunners sanctioned the departure of Brazilian forward Gabriel Jesus, who joined Barcelona for £8.6m after adding another Premier League winner's medal to his career achievements in England. Arsenal also completed the return of Portuguese midfielder Fábio Vieira to Hamburg for £7.7m, the club where he spent last season on loan and scored seven goals in 31 appearances.
Aston Villa were also prominent movers on deadline day, finally landing defender Taylor Harwood-Bellis from Southampton for £25m after two previous bids had been rejected. The England international, who won his first cap in 2024, joins after Villa persisted with their interest. In a separate deal, Villa also brought in teenage forward Ibrahim Mbaye from Paris Saint-Germain for £47m. Mbaye, who joined PSG as a 10-year-old, arrives in the Midlands as a Champions League winner.
Elsewhere, Crystal Palace secured Italian centre-back Honest Ahanor, 18, on loan from Atalanta, with the arrangement set to see him join Chelsea permanently once his season at Selhurst Park concludes.
German side Schalke 04 saw significant squad turnover, with three players departing on deadline day. Forward Christian Gomis moved to CD Tenerife on loan after making 19 league appearances and scoring once last season, seeking more regular game time. Midfielder Aris Bayindir was released as a free agent two years after his move from RB Leipzig. Meanwhile, young Australian defender Dylan Leonard joined Alemannia Aachen on loan, with Schalke director of football Youri Moulder stating:
