Bradley Barcola's move to Liverpool for a reported £123m marks the latest chapter in a remarkable rise for a player who, not too long ago, was struggling to find his place in Lyon's first team.
The 20-year-old winger, known as the 'grasshopper' for his speed, agility and slender frame, had impressed under former Lyon coach Peter Bosz before falling out of favor when Laurent Blanc took charge in October 2022. According to French outlet L'Equipe, Barcola came close to a loan move to Swiss side St Gallen in January 2023 in search of playing time.
A twist of fate changed his trajectory. Lyon forward Karl Toko Ekambi, frustrated after being substituted in a home defeat to Strasbourg, was caught on camera kicking a bin in the tunnel — an incident that effectively ended his time at the club. Barcola stepped into the void, starting most of Lyon's remaining fixtures that season and scoring five goals, including a memorable winner against eventual champions Paris Saint-Germain in April 2023.
Just five months later, Barcola signed for PSG in a deal reported at £38.5m, arriving in Paris shortly after Neymar's departure to Saudi Arabia. His full debut for the Parisians ironically came against his former club, Lyon, where he was booed by home supporters still frustrated over his exit. Journalist Pierre-Etienne Minonzio of L'Equipe recalled that PSG boss Luis Enrique asked the young winger if he felt ready to play — Barcola said yes, came off the bench, and impressed instantly.
Since then, Barcola has established himself as one of the most exciting talents in French football, winning three Ligue 1 titles and back-to-back Champions League crowns with PSG. He has also become a regular for the French national team, scoring three goals at this summer's World Cup as Les Bleus reached the semi-finals.
Born in September 2002, Barcola grew up in Vaulx-en-Velin near Lyon, one of six siblings. His older brother, Malcolm, is also a professional footballer, playing in goal for Ittihad Tanger in Morocco and the Togo national team. Their mother introduced them to football and would record their matches, while their father, Yves, encouraged discipline and technical development from an early age. Malcolm has spoken about how the brothers' contrasting roles — forward and goalkeeper — helped them develop together on weekends at their local stadium.
Barcola joined Lyon's academy at age eight and made his first-team debut 11 years later, following in the footsteps of past graduates such as Karim Benzema, Alexandre Lacazette, Samuel Umtiti and Corentin Tolisso.
Despite his rapid rise, Barcola has faced criticism, notably after missing chances in a Champions League match against Newcastle during his first season at PSG. He has credited his family for helping him stay grounded through such moments.
