Arsenal have officially completed the signing of 18-year-old striker Igor Tyjon from Blackburn Rovers, ending a pursuit that had stretched across multiple transfer windows without success until now. The young forward has been handed the No.64 shirt at his new club.
The move represents the culmination of a long-running interest from Arsenal, who had been tracking Tyjon for well over a year as part of their efforts to bolster striking options at academy level. Previous bids from the north London club, reportedly worth around £1million, were turned down by Blackburn before an increased offer finally secured the deal.
Tyjon will initially join Arsenal's Under-21s squad, though he is expected to train with the senior group under Mikel Arteta on occasion. There is optimism within the club that the teenager could be involved with the first team at some point this season, with his involvement likely tied to how far Arsenal progress in domestic cup competitions.
The signing forms part of a broader strategy by Arsenal to invest heavily in their academy setup, a push that has intensified over the current transfer window. The club are also close to finalising a separate double deal to bring in James Scanlon and Habeeb Ogunneye from Manchester United.
Tyjon's footballing journey began at Rochdale before he moved to Blackburn's academy in the summer of 2023. He made an immediate impression, scoring on his debut for the Under-21s at just 15 years old and earning a place on the first-team bench before that season had even finished.
In 2024, Tyjon put pen to paper on a two-year scholarship deal at Blackburn. He went on to make three appearances for the senior team and was a prolific presence for the Under-21s, netting 13 goals in 33 matches. While predominantly deployed as a central striker, he has also shown versatility by operating as a winger and in a No.10 role.
Blackburn had hoped to tie Tyjon down to a professional contract, but the striker made clear he had no intention of signing one. As a compromise, the Lancashire club extended his scholarship terms — which were set to run out this summer — by an additional year in an attempt to retain him. Ultimately, though, Arsenal's persistence paid off and the switch has now been rubber-stamped.
On the international front, Tyjon's background carries an interesting subplot. Both of his parents are Polish, and he represented Poland at Under-16 level. However, he has since switched allegiance and been capped by England, featuring for the Young Lions at last season's Under-17 World Cup.
Arsenal's willingness to increase their offer after being rebuffed multiple times underlines how highly they rate the teenager's potential. With the club continuing to invest in its youth pipeline, Tyjon's arrival adds another promising forward option to a growing crop of academy talent at the Emirates Stadium.
Whether he makes an impact at senior level this season remains to be seen, but Arsenal clearly view him as a long-term project worth pursuing given the effort taken to get the deal done.
