Tottenham Hotspur have knocked back an approach from Sunderland, who had proposed a season-long loan deal for centre-back Kevin Danso, according to reports.
The Austrian defender has struggled for regular action at Spurs this term and appeared to be a candidate to leave north London on a temporary basis. However, the north London club have decided against sanctioning the move for now, choosing to keep Danso within their defensive ranks despite his limited role in the squad.
Danso featured for the first time this season in midweek, coming off the bench during Tottenham's Carabao Cup victory over Charlton Athletic. That appearance offered a rare glimpse of first-team involvement for the 27-year-old, whose opportunities have become scarce following a summer of reinforcement in Tottenham's back line.
The club have strengthened their central defensive options considerably, bringing in Marcos Senesi and Jan Paul van Hecke, both of whom are expected to compete for starting positions this campaign. Adding to the competition, Micky van de Ven recently penned a new contract extension and was handed the captaincy, further cementing the pecking order ahead of Danso.
With such depth now available to manage, Danso's route to regular minutes appears increasingly difficult, which had fuelled speculation over a potential exit. Sunderland's interest suggested the Black Cats saw the defender as a means of bolstering their own options, but Tottenham's rejection of the loan proposal leaves his immediate future somewhat uncertain.

Danso's Tottenham career began in January 2025, when he arrived on an initial loan basis from French club Lens. Since then, the defender has made 37 appearances for the club, though his role has fluctuated depending on injuries and squad rotation.
Despite the increased competition for places in defense, Tottenham's decision to block the loan suggests the club still view Danso as a valuable member of their squad, either as cover for the new arrivals or as insurance against injuries during a long and demanding season that will see Spurs compete on multiple fronts.
