Chelsea Eye Move for Atalanta's Rising Defender Honest Ahanor

Chelsea have opened negotiations to sign Atalanta defender Honest Ahanor, according to BBC Sport, as the club continues to reshape its squad under new manager Xabi Alonso. The west London side had already shown interest in the 18-year-old Italian earlier this year when they completed the signing of right-back Marco Palestra from the same Serie A club in July.

Atalanta are reportedly prepared to part with Ahanor should Chelsea meet their valuation of 40 million euros, which is roughly £34.3 million. The young defender, who primarily operates at left-back, arrived at Atalanta from Genoa last summer on a three-year contract. That deal was reported to be worth 16 million euros, with a further 4 million euros in potential add-ons, underlining the club's belief in his long-term potential.

Since joining Atalanta, Ahanor has developed quickly, becoming a regular fixture in the side. He featured 28 times in Serie A last season, a significant workload for a teenager, and also made his mark on the European stage. His Champions League debut came in a 2-1 victory over Club Brugge in September, giving him valuable experience against continental opposition.

His progress has not gone unnoticed at international level either. In May, Ahanor received his first call-up to the senior Italy squad, being included for friendly matches against Luxembourg and Greece. That recognition further boosted his profile among clubs monitoring young defensive talent across Europe.

Should Chelsea complete the move, Ahanor would become the latest addition to a squad that has already undergone considerable change this summer. Alonso, who took charge at Stamford Bridge in July, has been active in the transfer market as he looks to stamp his own identity on the team. The most notable signing so far has been England international Morgan Rogers, who joined from Aston Villa in a club-record £117 million deal, signaling Chelsea's ambition to compete at the top of English and European football.

Alongside the marquee signing of Rogers, Alonso has also brought in experienced Premier League figures to add depth and leadership to the squad. Danny Welbeck and Jordan Henderson have both arrived at Stamford Bridge, bringing years of top-flight experience that could prove valuable as Chelsea navigate a demanding season across multiple competitions.

The potential addition of Ahanor would fit a pattern of Chelsea targeting promising young talent from Atalanta, following the earlier acquisition of Palestra. Both players represent the type of long-term investment the club appears keen to make, blending emerging prospects with established professionals under Alonso's guidance.

On the pitch, Chelsea have made a solid start to the new Premier League campaign. They opened their season with a 3-2 victory over Fulham on Monday, a result that will have given Alonso confidence heading into the next fixture. The Blues are set to host Brighton at home on Sunday, looking to build early momentum as the new manager continues to settle into his role.

While no agreement has yet been reached for Ahanor, the reported talks suggest Chelsea remain active in the market as they look to strengthen their defensive options for the campaign ahead. Atalanta's willingness to sell, provided their financial demands are met, could pave the way for a deal in the coming weeks.
