Chelsea Set to Part Ways with Liam Delap After Just One Season

Chelsea are prepared to let striker Liam Delap leave Stamford Bridge, barely 14 months after his high-profile arrival from Ipswich Town, as manager Xabi Alonso looks to trim a bloated squad ahead of the new campaign.

The 23-year-old joined Chelsea last summer for £30m when his release clause was triggered, beating competition from Manchester United, Newcastle United and Everton for his signature. However, after managing just one Premier League goal during a turbulent debut season in west London, the club now consider him surplus to requirements.

Despite the modest return, sources close to the situation say interested clubs are not questioning Delap's ability. Instead, his £50m valuation has been cited as the main obstacle to a deal, given his underwhelming first year at Chelsea. The club have shown flexibility in other departures this window - defenders Benoit Badiashile and Axel Disasi are both exiting on loan after initial efforts to sell them outright fell through - and it remains to be seen whether Chelsea will lower their asking price for Delap to facilitate a move.

Nottingham Forest have been credited with interest in the forward, though Leeds United, managed by Daniel Farke, are understood to have cooled their pursuit. Those close to Delap indicate he had hoped to remain at Chelsea and fight for his place, and he reportedly acknowledges that his performances last season did not meet expectations. However, there were extenuating circumstances: he played under three different managers during a chaotic campaign that saw Chelsea finish 10th, while hamstring and shoulder injuries disrupted his physical approach to the game and dented his confidence. His primary objective now is regular first-team football, whether that comes via loan or a permanent exit.

Delap's declining standing at the club was underlined this week when he lost the number nine shirt to Joao Pedro, the summer signing from Brighton who often outperformed him last season. He has since been moved into a group of around 12 fringe players who train separately from Alonso's main squad, though still at the Cobham facility alongside the first team.

Alonso's decision to split the group is seen as a practical response to managing a squad of roughly 40 players while preparing for his first competitive match away at Fulham on Monday. Chelsea have stressed that the arrangement is not permanent or punitive, noting that new arrivals Jordan Henderson and Danny Welbeck have also spent time in the secondary group while building match fitness despite being part of Alonso's plans.

The move differs from last season's controversial "bomb squad" approach, in which players such as Raheem Sterling and Disasi trained separately with different facilities and schedules - a practice criticised publicly by some of those involved and warned against by the Professional Footballers' Association. FIFA has since banned the tactic. Chelsea say the current setup, which keeps fringe players integrated with first-team facilities including the gym, dining areas and changing rooms, reflects lessons learned from a period the club has described as fostering a
