Chelsea's Record-Breaking Splash Tops Summer's Priciest Transfers List

By LiveScore365 Newsroom · Premier League Arsenal FC

The 2026 summer transfer window has produced a staggering spending spree across Europe's top leagues, with Premier League clubs alone shelling out more than £2bn, according to figures compiled and reported as of 21 August 2026.

Leading the list of the 20 most expensive moves of the window is Morgan Rogers, whose switch from Aston Villa to Chelsea for £117m has made him the most expensive British footballer in history. The 23-year-old attacking midfielder, who contributed 10 goals and six assists in 37 Premier League appearances last season, has signed a six-year deal to work under new Chelsea boss Xabi Alonso.

Rogers only narrowly edged out Elliot Anderson, who briefly held the British record after his £116m move from Nottingham Forest to Manchester City. The 23-year-old England midfielder, who played every minute of Forest's 38-game Premier League campaign last term, said joining City meant linking up with "winners – the sort of team I want to be a part of."

Real Madrid's capture of Ivory Coast winger Yan Diomande from RB Leipzig for £115.7m rounds out the top three, with the deal potentially rising to £120m via add-ons after Los Blancos fought off competition from Liverpool and PSG. The 19-year-old was named the Bundesliga's young player of the season following a campaign of 12 goals and eight assists.

Tottenham were among the window's busiest spenders, breaking their transfer record twice. They first paid £92.5m (potentially £100m with add-ons) for Italy midfielder Sandro Tonali from Newcastle, with the player crediting a conversation with compatriot Roberto de Zerbi for his decision to join. Spurs then smashed that mark again, handing West Ham £85m for Portugal midfielder Mateus Fernandes after just a single season in England.//end of Tottenham's spending was matched by continued reshuffling elsewhere. Bruno Guimaraes completed a £75m move from Newcastle to Premier League champions Arsenal, saying he was seeking a new challenge, while Anthony Gordon left Newcastle for Barcelona in a £69.3m deal following a productive World Cup campaign.

Manchester City sold Ballon d'Or winner Rodri to Barcelona for £65m, a significant departure given the Spaniard's central role in City's midfield dominance in recent seasons. AC Milan, meanwhile, made Goncalo Ramos their record signing at £60.2m, bringing in the Portugal striker as new manager Ruben Amorim's first purchase after his prolific spell at PSG.

Several deals also involved moves to Saudi Arabia, including Crysencio Summerville's £55m switch from West Ham to Al-Hilal and Tijjani Reijnders' £52m transfer from Manchester City to Al-Qadsiah, where he reunites with manager Brendan Rodgers.

Chelsea were particularly active in the market beyond their headline Rogers signing, also bringing in defender Marco Palestra from Atalanta for £47m as Alonso's first signing, and centre-back Maxence Lacroix from Crystal Palace for £52m following the Eagles' Conference League triumph. The club also saw left-back Marc Cucurella depart for Real Madrid in a £51.8m deal after he had publicly criticised Chelsea's hierarchy.

Other notable moves included Aston Villa's £51m capture of Johan Manzambi from Freiburg, Brighton's £46m signing of teenage defender Luka Vuskovic from Tottenham, and Manchester United's £48m deal for Brazilian midfielder Andrey Santos from Chelsea, the club's first permanent signing under new head coach Michael Carrick.

With the transfer window still open, further moves are expected before the deadline, but the scale of spending already confirms this as one of the most active summers in recent memory.
