Coventry City boss Frank Lampard has delivered a significant blow to his side's Premier League preparations, confirming that top scorer Haji Wright will be sidelined for a lengthy spell due to a serious quad injury.
Speaking at his pre-match press conference ahead of Coventry's clash with Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium, Lampard revealed that Wright will not be involved in the fixture and could be absent for as long as three months.
"Haji Wright won't be available for the Arsenal game," Lampard told reporters. "He won't be available for a little while, he's got a very serious quad injury which is disappointing for Haji and for us. It's certainly going to be a number of weeks, could even be up to 12 weeks."
The injury comes at a particularly unfortunate time for both player and club. Wright was instrumental in Coventry's promotion push last term, finishing as the team's leading scorer with 17 goals in the Championship as they secured a return to the top flight for the first time in 26 years. His absence now leaves Lampard with a selection puzzle as Coventry prepare for one of the toughest openings imaginable against an Arsenal side expected to challenge at the top of the table once again.
With Wright ruled out, Lampard has several options to consider when it comes to leading the line in north London. Summer signings Taiwo Awoniyi and Sidiki Cherif could both be handed their Coventry debuts. The pair arrived at the club this summer from Nottingham Forest and Fenerbahce respectively, with the combined transfer fee for the duo reported to be just under £30 million, underlining the ambition Coventry have shown in the transfer market following their promotion.
Another alternative available to Lampard is Ellis Simms, who joined from Everton and enjoyed a productive first season at the club. Simms netted 13 goals in the Championship last campaign, a tally bettered only by Wright among Coventry's entire squad, making him a credible option to spearhead the attack in Wright's absence.
Despite the setback, there was some positive news for Lampard regarding his squad's fitness. Both Ephron Mason-Clark and Jack Rudoni are in contention to feature against Arsenal, having overcome fitness issues that affected them during pre-season. Their potential involvement will offer Coventry some much-needed quality and creativity as they attempt to make an impression on their return to the Premier League.
The timing of Wright's injury is especially frustrating given the scale of Coventry's task this season. Having spent 26 years outside the top flight, the club will be eager to prove they belong at this level, and losing their most prolific forward for a potential three months represents a considerable challenge for Lampard as he looks to establish his side in the Premier League.
How Lampard chooses to reshuffle his attacking options will be closely watched, particularly given the significant investment made in Awoniyi and Cherif over the summer. Both new arrivals now find themselves potentially thrust into first-team action far sooner than anticipated, with the opportunity to make an immediate impact against one of the division's most formidable opponents.
Coventry will be hoping that whoever leads the line can help mitigate the loss of Wright as they begin what promises to be a demanding Premier League campaign.
