Chelsea look set to part ways with young defender Mamadou Sarr before the summer transfer window closes, with several clubs circling for his signature either on a permanent basis or loan deal.
According to reports, Real Sociedad are among the suitors exploring the possibility of taking the 20-year-old on loan for the upcoming season. Meanwhile, Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal have shifted their interest toward securing Sarr on a permanent deal, a change from earlier speculation that suggested Chelsea were more inclined to arrange a temporary switch within the Premier League for the Senegal international.
Sarr arrived at Stamford Bridge last summer in a £12 million transfer from Strasbourg, a club also owned by BlueCo, the same ownership group behind Chelsea. His time in west London has included a notable highlight: lifting the Club World Cup trophy after Chelsea's commanding 3-0 win over Paris Saint-Germain in the final.
Despite that triumph, playing opportunities have been limited for the young centre-back. He spent the beginning of last season back in France on loan before Chelsea called him back during the January transfer window, on deadline day. Since his return, Sarr has featured in just six Premier League matches, and he was notably absent from the matchday squad for Chelsea's FA Cup final loss to Manchester City in May.
One of his more high-profile appearances came in the Champions League round of 16, when then-manager Liam Rosenior surprised many by starting Sarr against Paris Saint-Germain at Stamford Bridge. The defender found it difficult to contain PSG winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and was substituted at halftime, a match that perhaps underscored the challenges he still faces at the top level.
With Xabi Alonso now at the helm, the Spanish manager evaluated Sarr's progress during pre-season training. The conclusion reached was that a loan move would best serve the player's continued development, allowing him regular game time away from the intense competition for places at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea's defensive reshuffling doesn't end with Sarr. Fellow centre-back Benoit Badiashile is also on the verge of departing on loan, with a move to Napoli in Serie A reportedly close to being finalized. The Italian club is said to have included an option to make the deal permanent next summer.
Details of the Badiashile arrangement suggest Chelsea will receive a loan fee in the region of €3 million (£2.5 million), while Napoli's option to sign him outright next year is valued at approximately €27 million (£23 million).
Both moves reflect Chelsea's broader strategy under Alonso to streamline the squad and provide developing defenders with pathways to first-team football elsewhere, even if that means temporarily or permanently losing depth in central defense. For Sarr, a switch to Real Sociedad would offer regular La Liga action, while a move to Al-Hilal would represent a more definitive break from Chelsea and a shift to Saudi football.
As the transfer window edges toward its close, all eyes will be on how these negotiations develop, with Chelsea seemingly prioritizing player development and squad balance over retaining every asset acquired in recent transfer windows.
