Fernandez Transfer Saga Draws Comparisons to Isak's Liverpool Move

By LiveScore365 Newsroom · Arsenal FC

Manchester City's pursuit of Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez is beginning to resemble the drawn-out transfer saga that saw Alexander Isak eventually join Liverpool from Newcastle United last summer, with the Argentine's future still unresolved as the window enters its final weeks.

Chelsea had reportedly reached an agreement in late May with Fernandez's representative Javier Pastore over a potential £120m departure, but set a deadline of 14 August for formal bids to arrive. With no offers submitted by that date, Chelsea have since informed Fernandez's camp that he will not be sold this window.

Despite that stance, uncertainty persists. City, managed by Enzo Maresca—who previously worked with Fernandez at Chelsea—remain interested in signing the 25-year-old, and there is a belief within City that Chelsea are still open to a sale behind the scenes. Reports from Spain suggest the London club have brought in influential agent Jorge Mendes, who also represents Pedro Neto, to help navigate the situation.

City are simultaneously negotiating an £85m deal for Moroccan midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi as they look to rebuild their midfield following Rodri's move to Barcelona and Bernardo Silva's departure at the end of his contract. The club have already brought in Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest for a club-record £116m, winger Jeremy Monga from Leicester City for £12.5m, and goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli from Marseille for £1.7m. Should both Fernandez and Bouaddi arrive, City's summer spending under Maresca would surpass £330m, partly offset by departures including Rodri, James Trafford, and the expected exits of Tijjani Reijnders and Savinho, along with wage savings from Silva, John Stones and Nathan Ake leaving.

Fernandez's situation is complicated further by his own attempts to leave Chelsea earlier this summer, when he pursued a move to Real Madrid—an interest the Spanish club later denied. His relationship with Chelsea supporters has also grown tense, evidenced by mixed reactions, including audible jeers, when he came on as a substitute during Saturday's 3-1 friendly victory over Real Sociedad.

Chelsea have nonetheless attempted to signal their commitment to keeping him integrated within the squad, handing him the captain's armband after he replaced Reece James in that same match. Still, doubts remain over whether he will stay beyond the transfer deadline, and there are concerns internally about the disruption a late-window departure could cause—particularly for new head coach Xabi Alonso, who might then need to identify a replacement in a short timeframe.

The parallels with Isak's move to Liverpool are notable. Last year, Newcastle firmly rejected an opening £110m bid and publicly maintained that the striker was not for sale, even as it became widely known he was training away from the club with former side Real Sociedad. The saga dragged on until Liverpool completed a British record £125m deal just hours after the transfer window had officially closed. Newcastle had already reinvested in attacking options, signing Nick Woltemade from Stuttgart for a club-record £69m and Yoane Wissa from Brentford for £55m, though neither made the desired impact as the Magpies endured a difficult campaign.

At Chelsea, Alonso has been experimenting with a 3-4-2-1 formation in pre-season, a system reminiscent of his title-winning spell at Bayer Leverkusen. In Saturday's friendly, Moises Caicedo and James formed the central midfield pairing, with Jordan Henderson out injured and Romeo Lavia introduced from the bench, while Valentin Barco and Dario Essugo remained unused.

Chelsea are considered well-stocked in central midfield, especially given the absence of European competition this season, meaning they could manage without directly replacing Fernandez if he departs. The club have also been active in the market themselves, including a £64m bid for Bournemouth's Alex Scott—rejected outright by the Cherries—and have been linked with Crystal Palace's Adam Wharton and Monaco's Lamine Camara. Arsenal's Myles Lewis-Skelly was reportedly offered to Chelsea but is said to want to remain at the Emirates.

Whether Chelsea ultimately resist City's advances and fully reintegrate Fernandez, or sanction his exit before the deadline, looks set to be one of the defining storylines of the transfer window's closing stages.
