Arsenal Name David Horseman as New Under-21s Head Coach

Arsenal have announced the appointment of David Horseman as head coach of their under-21 side, filling the vacancy left by Max Porter earlier this year.

Porter departed the role in June and has since taken up a position as assistant manager to Mark Robins at Stoke City. Before his time overseeing Arsenal's young talent, Porter had built a playing career that began in Tottenham's youth academy and included spells at AFC Wimbledon, Barnet and Bromley.

Horseman steps into the role having previously worked as an elite player development coach within Arsenal's academy setup, a position he took up after joining the club in 2025. His path into senior coaching had earlier included four years in charge of Southampton's B team before he took his first senior managerial role at Forest Green Rovers in July 2023.

That spell proved short-lived. Horseman was dismissed just five months into the job in December 2023, having managed to win only two of his first seven matches in charge.

Following his exit from Forest Green Rovers, Horseman moved into a first-team coaching role at Bristol Rovers. He later took charge as the club's interim head coach in 2024, sharing responsibilities with former Sunderland boss Lee Cattermole, after Matt Taylor was relieved of his duties. Despite the coaching change, Bristol Rovers were unable to avoid relegation to League Two, and Horseman left the club before returning to work in youth football.

Now back at Arsenal in a more senior capacity, Horseman will take responsibility for guiding the club's under-21 squad, a group tasked with developing players who could eventually break into the first team under Mikel Arteta.

Speaking after his appointment was confirmed, Horseman expressed pride at taking on the role. "I'm absolutely delighted and privileged to be appointed Arsenal under-21s head coach, following in the footsteps of so many outstanding coaches who have held this position before me," he said. "It's a huge honour to contribute to the continued success of an academy with such a proud history of developing players for our first team and the wider game."

Arsenal's academy has long been regarded as one of the more productive pathways in English football, having helped shape the careers of numerous players who have gone on to feature for the senior side. The under-21 role therefore carries significant weight within the club's broader footballing structure, with expectations to continue producing talent capable of stepping up to compete at the highest level.

Horseman's appointment comes at a time when Arsenal are preparing to defend their Premier League title, meaning the pathway between the academy and first-team squad remains a key part of the club's long-term planning. His experience across various coaching levels, from academy development to senior interim management, will likely be viewed as valuable preparation for the challenges of leading Arsenal's next generation of players.

With Porter now settled into his new role at Stoke City under Mark Robins, attention turns to how Horseman will shape the under-21 squad moving forward, as Arsenal continue to invest in nurturing homegrown talent alongside their first-team ambitions.
