Rubin Colwill's Late Free-Kick Rescues Point for Cardiff in Welsh Derby Thriller

By LiveScore365 Newsroom · Championship Cardiff City

A stunning stoppage-time free-kick from substitute Rubin Colwill denied Wrexham a first victory in Cardiff since 1992, as the Championship derby finished 1-1 at Cardiff City Stadium.

With the match deep into eight minutes of added time, Wrexham appeared set to leave south Wales with all three points until George Dobson fouled Joel Colwill just outside the penalty area. His brother Rubin stepped up and curled a powerful strike over the defensive wall, beating goalkeeper Anthony Patterson to snatch a dramatic equaliser.

The late drama capped a contest that had begun disastrously for Cardiff, who fell behind inside three minutes to former player Kieffer Moore. The striker's goal was his seventh against his old club and ended a personal drought stretching back to February, having gone 11 matches without finding the net for Wrexham.

Moore's opener stemmed from defensive uncertainty at the back for the hosts, who had been forced into reshuffling their backline due to injuries affecting Calum Chambers, Dylan Lawlor and Will Fish. Regular left-back Joel Bagan was shifted into central defence alongside Gabriel Osho as a makeshift pairing, and the new partnership was breached almost immediately.

A Lewis O'Brien free-kick was only partially cleared by Cardiff, falling to Danny Imray, whose forward pass caught the home defence out of position. Osho inadvertently played Moore onside, allowing the striker to burst past Bagan and fire a shot over goalkeeper Nathan Trott to open the scoring.

Cardiff struggled early to adjust to the pace of Championship action, though they gradually found their footing as the first half progressed. Trott was called into action to deny Callum Doyle's header, while at the other end a mix-up saw Zak Vyner's short back pass nearly gifted a chance to Yousef Salech, only for Patterson to react swiftly and clear the danger.

Cardiff created further openings before the break, with Jack Moylan firing over the crossbar and Patterson producing a routine save to thwart Cian Ashford following a fluent passing move. Wrexham also threatened again when Moore glanced a header off O'Brien's delivery just over the bar, while Trott was forced into another save from a scuffed Imray effort that looked destined to miss the target regardless.

The second half saw Cardiff momentarily lose concentration once more. Ollie Rathbone picked out Doyle inside the box, but Trott reacted quickly to block with his foot. The goalkeeper then made a routine stop against Nathan Broadhead before Doyle unleashed a powerful drive that beat Trott only to cannon back off the post.

Seeking a spark, Cardiff introduced both Colwill brothers shortly after the hour mark. Moylan came close with a deflected shot that narrowly missed the target, while Wrexham's Dominic Hyam headed against his own crossbar in a nervy passage of play.

Despite being outshot 18-11 across the match and failing to convert several promising positions into a second goal, Wrexham were ultimately made to rue their missed chances. Cardiff's resilience paid off in the final act, with Rubin Colwill's dead-ball strike ensuring the Bluebirds salvaged a share of the spoils in a fiercely contested Welsh derby.
