Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has acknowledged that a transfer away from the club could be the right path for young midfielder Ethan Nwaneri, should regular first-team opportunities not be available to him at the Emirates Stadium.
Speaking to reporters on Friday ahead of Arsenal's Community Shield clash with Manchester City, Arteta made clear that while he would prefer to retain Nwaneri, the teenager's long-term development remains the priority above all else. Arsenal are reportedly willing to consider substantial bids for the youngster, though no formal decision on his future has yet been made.
"I want him to be at the club but something is in the medium and long-term, what is the best for the player as well," Arteta explained. He stressed that playing time is the crucial factor in determining whether Nwaneri stays or goes. "Ethan needs to play football. If he stays here, it's because we can guarantee that he can have those minutes. Otherwise, it's just something that is not good for anybody, I think."
The comments come after a season in which Nwaneri spent time away from Arsenal on loan in France, a spell that Arteta believes has significantly aided his growth as a player. Following Arsenal's friendly against Como, the Spanish coach observed that Nwaneri appeared considerably more mature as a result of his experience abroad.
That loan spell was not without its challenges. Habib Beye, who was in charge of Marseille at the time, criticized Nwaneri back in April, stating that the young Englishman needed "to give us way more in his day-to-day commitment." Those remarks painted a picture of a player still adapting to the demands of senior football in a new environment.
However, Arteta's assessment now paints a markedly different picture, one of a player who has used the difficulties of his time in France to accelerate his development. "I don't know on the plans but certainly it opens your eyes in terms of how much a young player can evolve in such a short period," the Arsenal boss said. "An experience abroad with certain difficulties and challenges, what you can get out of that."
Arteta went on to praise Nwaneri's character and footballing qualities, suggesting the midfielder has proven he belongs at the highest level despite the setbacks he faced during his loan. "I think he's done it in a brilliant way. It's unquestionable the talent, the desire, the love and the passion he has for the game. It's something that I always loved about Ethan," he said. "I think he had some great games, he's shown everybody that he has the ability to be here."
The situation leaves Arsenal with a delicate balancing act this summer. Nwaneri, regarded as one of the most promising talents to emerge from the club's academy in recent years, faces stiff competition for midfield minutes in a squad packed with established options. Arteta's willingness to entertain the idea of a departure suggests the club recognizes that continued development may require regular football elsewhere, even as they value what the player could offer in north London.
