Shakhtar Donetsk are reportedly working on plans to host their Champions League fixtures at Chelsea's Stamford Bridge as they continue their search for a suitable base in the United Kingdom to stage elite European football.
The Ukrainian champions have been forced to play their home matches away from Ukraine because of the ongoing war, and west London has emerged as a location of interest given its large Ukrainian community. According to the latest Office for National Statistics figures, roughly 32,000 Ukraine-born residents live in London, while an estimated 100,000 people of Ukrainian heritage reside across the UK as a whole.
Before settling on Stamford Bridge as their preferred option, Shakhtar had also explored the possibility of using Fulham's Craven Cottage and Brentford's Gtech Community Stadium. However, both venues offer significantly smaller capacities than Chelsea's ground, and club officials believe a bigger stadium would allow them to attract larger crowds for games against some of Europe's most prominent clubs, or potentially English opposition.
Stamford Bridge's availability has been aided by circumstance. Chelsea finished 10th in the Premier League last season, meaning the club missed out on qualification for European competition this term. As a result, there is expected to be no major scheduling conflict between Chelsea's domestic fixtures and any Champions League matches Shakhtar might stage at the venue.
Despite the lack of clashes on paper, the plan is not yet a formality. Any agreement to use Stamford Bridge for additional matches would require sign-off from Hammersmith and Fulham Council as well as approval from UEFA before Shakhtar could officially adopt the ground as a temporary home for their European fixtures.
Shakhtar have become accustomed to nomadic existence in recent seasons, having been displaced from their traditional territory well before the outbreak of full-scale war in 2022. The club, originally based in Donetsk, lost access to their home region following the conflict in eastern Ukraine that began in 2014, forcing them to relocate to Kyiv and other cities for domestic and continental fixtures. The escalation of the war three years ago added further complications, with security concerns making it impossible to host high-profile European nights on Ukrainian soil.
Basing themselves in London would mark a significant shift for the club, offering both greater visibility on the European stage and a symbolic connection to the sizeable diaspora community that has grown in the UK since the invasion. Officials at Shakhtar are understood to view the move as an opportunity to strengthen ties with Ukrainians living abroad while also ensuring the club can operate in a stadium capable of meeting the demands of Champions League football.
Should the switch be approved, it would represent one of the more unusual arrangements in the competition's recent history, with a Ukrainian club effectively adopting an English Premier League venue as its continental base. The final decision now rests on discussions between Shakhtar, Chelsea, local authorities and European football's governing body, with all parties needing to reach agreement before any fixtures could be confirmed for Stamford Bridge.
For now, Shakhtar's ambitions appear to hinge on turning what has been a season of disappointment for Chelsea domestically into an unexpected opportunity for a club still searching for stability amid the disruption caused by war back home.
