Aston Villa fans bracing for a difficult summer following the departures of Youri Tielemans, Morgan Rogers and Lucas Digne may have found an unexpected source of optimism in a 17-year-old striker who has quickly become one of the most talked-about young talents in English football.
Brian Madjo, standing at 6ft4in, was cleared to play competitive matches for Aston Villa earlier this month after the Court of Arbitration for Sport ruled in his favour following a dispute between the club and Fifa. The disagreement centred on whether Madjo's £10m move from Metz in January should be classified as a domestic or international transfer. Had the latter been confirmed, the striker would have been barred from playing until his 18th birthday next January, given his status as a minor at the time of the deal.
While the case was being resolved, Madjo continued to build momentum, scoring four goals during pre-season friendlies against Walsall, Real Sociedad and the Indonesia All Stars. Once officially cleared to play, he wasted little time making an impact at the highest level, starting for Villa against Paris Saint-Germain and becoming the youngest player ever to start in the fixture traditionally used to open the European season.
Madjo didn't stop there. Despite missing several clear-cut opportunities early in the match, he became the youngest player to ever score in the fixture, netting a well-taken volley from a tight angle on the left-hand side. The goal came after the teenager had shown notable physical presence throughout the contest, at one point outmuscling Ecuador international and two-time European champion Willian Pacho.
The performance has fuelled excitement around Villa Park, though there remains an ongoing question over which national team Madjo will ultimately represent. Born in Enfield, London, the striker was raised in Luxembourg after his Cameroonian parents relocated there, and he has already earned caps for Luxembourg at friendly level. Both Luxembourg and England are believed to be interested in securing his long-term international future, with Cameroon also considered a possible contender given his family background.
Madjo's rapid emergence places him among a wave of highly rated teenage talents currently breaking through in English football, including Arsenal's Max Dowman (16), Manchester United's JJ Gabriel (15), Liverpool's Rio Ngumoha (17) and Manchester City's Ryan McAidoo (18). His Villa teammate George Hemmings, 19, has also been mentioned as one to watch following the recent Super Cup fixture.
While there is caution around placing too much expectation on a player so young — comparisons have been drawn with previous highly-touted prospects who failed to fulfil their early promise — Madjo's combination of physicality, composure and finishing ability has already made him one of the standout storylines of the early season.
Villa will be hoping the teenager can continue to develop and contribute meaningfully as the club looks to replace the creative and defensive contributions lost through the summer's departures. For now, though, the focus remains on a debut performance that few inside Villa Park will forget in a hurry.
