Brian Madjo: The Teenage Sensation Turning Heads at Aston Villa

A name unfamiliar to most football fans quickly became the subject of countless internet searches this week after Brian Madjo, Aston Villa's 17-year-old striker, etched himself into the record books as the youngest goalscorer in Super Cup history.

Standing at 6ft 4in, Madjo brushed past the experienced Willian Pacho before smashing a first-time volley beyond PSG goalkeeper Matvey Safonov, leveling the score just before halftime. Although PSG ultimately lifted the trophy, it was Madjo's electric first-half showing that dominated the post-match conversation. The goal capped a promising display in which he had already gone close twice, missing the target once and striking the woodwork on another occasion.

The strike marked Madjo's first professional goal, the culmination of an eight-month wait since Villa completed his signing in January. His arrival at the club, however, was delayed by FIFA regulations barring international transfers of players under 18. Villa took the case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, arguing that Madjo, born in Enfield to Cameroonian parents before relocating abroad as a child, was effectively returning to his country of birth. The appeal was eventually successful.

Madjo's father, Guy Madjo, had his own journeyman career in England's lower leagues after leaving Cameroon at 20, and was playing for Shrewsbury Town when Brian was born. Guy Madjo later fled to West Africa following his arrest for sexually assaulting a woman in Hampshire. He was convicted in absentia at Winchester Crown Court and sentenced to three-and-a-half years in prison, but never returned to Britain, reportedly resuming his playing career in Gabon.

Raised in Luxembourg, Brian Madjo came through the youth ranks at Racing Union before being spotted by Ligue 1 side FC Metz at just 14 years old. His rapid development continued at Metz, where 13 goals in 26 appearances for the under-19s earned him a professional contract at 16. He became the club's youngest-ever player, making his Ligue 1 debut at 16 years and 217 days old.

Despite having played only five senior matches for Metz without scoring, Madjo's physical presence attracted significant interest, including reported interest from Chelsea. Aston Villa moved decisively, aided by manager Unai Emery's personal admiration for the youngster after watching footage of his performances. Luxembourg's technical director, Manuel Cardoni, previously drew comparisons to Romelu Lukaku, suggesting Madjo possesses an even more well-rounded skill set.
