A pre-season friendly between Fulham and Malaga descended into farce on Wednesday night after the two clubs disagreed over whether the match should be settled by a penalty shootout, leaving the home side to convert a spot-kick into an unguarded net.
The Costa del Sol Trophy clash appeared to have ended in a 2-2 draw after Malaga snatched a stoppage-time equaliser at the Estadio La Rosaleda. Fulham defender Calvin Bassey was penalized for a handball deep into the closing stages, and striker Eneko Jauregi stepped up to convert the resulting penalty, levelling the score in the dying moments of normal time.
What followed only added to the confusion. Malaga coach Alvaro Arbeloa, the former Real Madrid defender, was shown a red card for appearing to argue with the referee once the final whistle sounded. Rather than staying to contest a shootout, Arbeloa walked straight down the tunnel, with the rest of the Fulham squad following him under the impression that the match had concluded.
Malaga, however, believed the Costa del Sol Trophy was to be decided by penalties in the event of a draw, and their players stayed out on the pitch to prepare for a shootout. With Fulham nowhere to be seen and supporters still in the stands anticipating further action, Jauregi placed the ball on the spot once more and slotted it into the empty goal, prompting his teammates to celebrate as though the trophy had been won in front of the home crowd.
The contrasting accounts from each club later emerged in their respective statements. Fulham insisted there had been a prior agreement that no shootout would take place if the game ended level. "We can confirm that prior to the match, both teams agreed that there would not be a penalty shootout in the event of a draw," the London club wrote on X.
Malaga offered a different version of events in a post-match report published on their official website. The Spanish side stated that a shootout had indeed been arranged as part of the fixture, but that Fulham left the field regardless, with the Premier League club apparently arguing that such a shootout had not been included in the terms of the contract for the friendly.
The unusual scenes brought an eventful end to what had otherwise been a competitive pre-season encounter between the two clubs, played out under the Costa del Sol Trophy banner in southern Spain. Neither side has since issued further clarification on how the dispute might be resolved, or whether the trophy itself will be awarded.
Fulham's preparations for the new campaign are not yet finished, with one more pre-season test remaining. Marco Silva's side are due to face Stuttgart on Saturday in their final warm-up fixture before the competitive season gets underway.
The Premier League campaign proper will begin for Fulham at Craven Cottage, where they host Chelsea in a London derby on Monday, 24 August, with kick-off scheduled for 20:00 BST. Attention will quickly turn away from the chaotic scenes in Malaga as the club focuses on league matters, though the episode is likely to be remembered as one of the stranger moments of this summer's pre-season schedule.
