Arne Slot Rules Out Netherlands Job, Confirms Return to Club Football

By LiveScore365 Newsroom · Liverpool

Former Liverpool boss Arne Slot has clarified that his next managerial role will be in club football, ending speculation that he was set to take charge of the Netherlands national team.

Slot had been in discussions with the KNVB, the Dutch football federation, about replacing Ronald Koeman, who departed the post following the Netherlands' exit from the World Cup at the round-of-32 stage against Morocco. Reports had suggested talks between Slot and the KNVB had broken down over disagreements concerning salary and the length of a potential contract, but the coach has now moved to correct that narrative.

Speaking to Voetbal International, Slot addressed the rumors directly, stating that the process never advanced far enough for such disputes to arise. "Over the past few weeks, and particularly the past few days, various reports have appeared regarding the vacancy at the Dutch national team, suggesting that I had withdrawn from the process after lengthy negotiations, including regarding salary and contract duration," he said. "That speculation is incorrect. We simply never reached that stage of the talks."

Instead, Slot explained that his decision to step away from discussions was driven by a personal preference to remain closely involved in day-to-day coaching, something he feels is not possible in the same capacity with international management. "At this stage of my career, I prefer to see myself on the training pitch with my players every day. Something that is simply not possible in the same way with a national team," he said. "And [this is] why I chose not to continue the talks and not to start negotiations on what a possible contract might look like."

Despite turning down the opportunity, Slot was keen to emphasize his admiration for the Dutch federation and the professionalism shown throughout their conversations. "I have enormous respect for the national team and for the KNVB and can only be positive about the professional manner in which the talks proceeded that week," he added.

The 47-year-old, who left Anfield after his tenure as Liverpool head coach, is currently without a club but insists his focus remains on continuing his career at club level rather than transitioning into international football at this point in time. "For now, I believe that club football still has a lot to offer me," Slot said.

He did not entirely close the door on managing his home nation in the future, however, describing it as a potential honor he would welcome under the right circumstances. "It would be a great honour to represent my country as national coach one day. However, this was not the right moment for me," he said.

Slot's comments bring some clarity to a managerial search that had generated considerable interest following Koeman's exit. The KNVB will now need to continue its search for a new head coach as speculation over Slot's next destination in club football is likely to intensify given his availability as a free agent.

During his time at Liverpool, Slot took over from Jurgen Klopp and led the club through a significant period of transition. His future employer remains unknown, but his statement suggests he is eager to return to a hands-on coaching role sooner rather than later, prioritizing daily involvement with a squad over the demands and rhythms of international football management.
