Kalvin Phillips is on the verge of a second stint at Sheffield United, with Manchester City preparing to loan out the England midfielder for a fourth time since his high-profile move from Leeds United in 2022.
The 30-year-old, who still has two years remaining on his contract at the Etihad Stadium, has been unable to establish himself under Pep Guardiola since arriving in a £42.5m deal. Phillips has started just six matches for City across all competitions during his time at the club and has not played a Premier League minute for them since 2023.
His fitful City career has instead been defined by a string of loan departures, first to West Ham United, then to Ipswich Town, and most recently back to Sheffield United last season. That spell at Bramall Lane, however, was cut short by misfortune. Phillips made only three appearances before being sent off in a Steel City derby against Sheffield Wednesday, and a subsequent knee injury ended his campaign prematurely, preventing him from featuring again.
Despite that disrupted return, Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder has opted to bring Phillips back for a second loan spell, seeking to bolster his midfield options amid the potential departure of Gustavo Hamer to Coventry City. Wilder previously worked with Phillips during his first loan stint and appears keen to give the midfielder a platform to rebuild momentum in his career.
Phillips' struggles at City have persisted even as the club underwent significant change. Guardiola's departure and the arrival of new manager Enzo Maresca have not altered his standing within the squad, and uncertainty continues to surround fellow defensive midfielder Rodri, who has been strongly linked with a move to Barcelona. Even with a potential vacancy opening up in that area of the pitch, Phillips has not been handed a route back into contention.
Last season, Phillips' involvement with City was limited to a brief seven-minute appearance in a Carabao Cup victory over Huddersfield Town, underlining just how peripheral he has become at the Etihad. Since his blockbuster transfer from Leeds, where he was regarded as one of the Premier League's most promising young English midfielders, Phillips has managed only two Premier League starts for City.
The midfielder, who has earned 31 caps for England, once looked destined to be a mainstay in both his country's and City's midfield setups. His performances for Leeds and England during the delayed Euro 2020 tournament had marked him out as one of the most sought-after homegrown talents in the country, prompting City to make their significant investment in 2022.
However, adapting to Guardiola's demanding tactical system proved difficult, and a combination of injuries, loan moves, and limited opportunities have stalled his development at the highest level. Now, as he prepares for another temporary switch away from Manchester, Phillips will be hoping that a return to familiar surroundings at Sheffield United can help him rediscover consistency and form.
