Shea Charles has completed a £30 million transfer from Southampton to Fulham, making him the costliest Northern Ireland international in the country's football history. The move returns the 22-year-old midfielder to the Premier League after a winding journey through England's football pyramid.
Charles began his development at Manchester City, joining the academy as a seven-year-old and steadily rising through the club's youth ranks. His standout campaign came in 2021-22, when he was part of a Manchester City Premier League 2 title-winning squad that also featured Cole Palmer, Morgan Rogers and Nico O'Reilly.
His talent was evident even before he had featured for City's senior side. In June 2022, he earned a surprise call-up to the Northern Ireland squad under then-manager Ian Baraclough and made his international debut as a substitute against Greece. "I hope I can just push on from here and get more caps. It was a great feeling to make my debut," Charles said at the time. "I didn't expect to be playing in this game, but I will take every chance as it comes."
That opportunistic mentality has defined his rise. Since Michael O'Neill returned as Northern Ireland manager later in 2022, Charles has become one of his most trusted players, missing just three matches - one through suspension and another due to a hamstring injury.
At City, Charles trained alongside senior stars such as Rodri and Fernandinho, gaining invaluable experience even though regular first-team football proved elusive. He finally made his senior City debut in May 2023, coming on as a substitute in a final-day meeting with Brentford after the club had already secured the league title. "When we train with the first team the standard is so high and we are always learning, every day," Charles said in 2022. "With the likes of Rodri and Fernandinho, it is tough but enjoyable."
A month later, he joined Southampton on a four-year deal, making 32 appearances as the Saints secured promotion to the Premier League. He then spent time on loan at Sheffield Wednesday, impressing manager Danny Rohl, who described him as a player with high potential who unfortunately did not belong to the Owls.
Charles' leadership qualities were also recognized during this period. O'Neill handed him the Northern Ireland captaincy just ten days after his 21st birthday, making him the youngest player to lead the country since Terry Neill in 1963. "Shea has got the attributes to play at the highest level of the game, and the temperament to do so, and that is what you look for as a captain," O'Neill said.
Returning to Southampton last season following their relegation, Charles enjoyed his most productive campaign in front of goal, scoring six times. Among his most memorable contributions was the winning goal against eventual Premier League champions Arsenal in the FA Cup quarter-finals, as well as a goal against Liverpool at Anfield in the EFL Cup. He also scored in the Championship play-off semi-final victory over Middlesbrough, though Southampton's promotion hopes were ultimately dashed amid the club's
