Bruno Guimaraes received a rousing welcome from Arsenal supporters on Sunday as he was formally presented to fans before the club's Emirates Cup fixture against Borussia Dortmund, though the Brazilian midfielder was not yet ready to make his playing debut. Instead, Guimaraes watched from the sidelines as his new teammates suffered a 3-2 defeat in their first home outing of the summer.
Despite not featuring, the newly signed midfielder has already made an impression behind the scenes. Speaking after the loss to Dortmund, manager Mikel Arteta praised the energy and mentality Guimaraes has brought to the club since arriving.
"We see very clearly, especially the energy that he brought immediately to the training ground, the hunger, the desire to come here and create a big history at the club," Arteta said. "And that's the ambition that we need. We want to go to the next level and very, very much convinced that we're going to need players with such a personality, desire and character to push everybody inside the organisation to go even higher."
Arteta also outlined the qualities he expects Guimaraes to bring once he is fully integrated into the side, highlighting his tactical flexibility and attacking instincts. "On the pitch, versatility to play in two different positions in relation to what the opponent or we do," the Arsenal boss explained. "A player who obviously has tremendous timing and intuition to win the ball back and progress play very, very fast. He's a player that is very comfortable putting people through, pulling between the lines, pulling behind. And then he's a goal threat. He's got a smell and a really good timing to get in the box and he has the capacity to finish the actions."
Guimaraes only began training with his new Arsenal teammates last week, and coaching staff determined he was not yet prepared to take part against Dortmund. The delay stems from an extended rest period following Brazil's elimination from the World Cup, which left the midfielder with a shortened pre-season compared to others in the squad.
Before completing his switch to north London, Guimaraes briefly reunited with his former Newcastle teammates during their training camp in La Manga, primarily to bid farewell to players and staff at the club. His workload has since increased at Arsenal's London Colney training base, with further progression expected in the days ahead.
Arsenal are hopeful that Guimaraes will be included in the matchday squad for their final pre-season fixture against Como on Wednesday night at the Emirates Stadium, though his involvement is likely to be restricted as the club carefully manages his return to full fitness. That approach mirrors how Arsenal handled the reintegration of Martin Odegaard, Kai Havertz and Viktor Gyokeres earlier in preseason, each of whom was limited to around 30 minutes upon returning from World Cup duty.
Should his fitness continue to progress as planned, Guimaraes could be handed a more prominent role when Arsenal face Manchester City in the Community Shield on Sunday, potentially setting him up to be involved for the Premier League season opener against Coventry five days later.
Getting Guimaraes up to speed is a priority for Arteta, whose midfield options have been stretched thin during pre-season, compounded by a pair of underwhelming results in recent friendlies. Adding to the squad's gradual build-up, midfielders Martin Zubimendi, Declan Rice, Eberechi Eze and Mikel Merino only returned to training this week after being given three weeks off following the World Cup.
