Nobbs: Promotion Would Be 'Job Done' for Newcastle This Season

Newcastle United midfielder Jill Scott... no, Jordan Nobbs has made clear that securing promotion is the target for Newcastle this season, insisting the club cannot shy away from stating their ambitions after a summer of significant squad changes.

Reflecting on last season, Nobbs pointed to a lack of consistency in front of goal and results as the key factor that prevented the club from climbing the table, admitting that too many drawn matches proved costly. Despite that setback, she believes the foundations built last term should not be discarded entirely, with much of the approach and philosophy under head coach Tanya Oxtoby remaining in place heading into the new campaign.

Oxtoby, who has previous experience managing the Northern Ireland national team and worked alongside Emma Hayes during her time at Chelsea, has overseen a busy transfer window at Newcastle as the club looks to strengthen its promotion push. Nobbs has expressed confidence that the squad is progressing under her guidance, even if the process of building a promotion-ready team takes time.

"I know we said it last season but I've always said things don't happen overnight. We had a lot of changes," Nobbs said. "But [promotion] is our goal and you have to say that out loud. A lot of stuff we did last season, we don't want to go too far away from."

Her comments underline a belief within the squad that while adjustments are needed, the core principles established last season provide a solid platform to build upon. Rather than a complete overhaul, Newcastle appear to be targeting refinement and consistency as the keys to finally breaking through this campaign.

Beyond her contributions on the pitch, Nobbs has also embraced a leadership role within the squad, something she says has evolved naturally rather than being imposed as added pressure. Teammates have reportedly taken to referring to her as a "legend" of the women's game, a label she has approached with a mix of humility and humor.

"I try to still be myself but obviously give as much experience as I can off the pitch. I've played a lot of games now so you do want to listen to that," Nobbs explained. "The girls straight away made jokes about me being a legend so they kind of made it a nice feeling rather than a pressure thing."

She added that finding the right balance between mentoring younger players and continuing to perform at a high level herself remains important, noting she is conscious of not overstepping into a purely advisory role while she still has plenty to contribute as a player.

"It just allowed me to step into that type of role," Nobbs said. "There's a balance of not being too over the top because I've still got to perform."

Newcastle's experienced midfielder now turns her attention to the opening fixture of the new season, as the club prepares to launch its promotion campaign at home. The Magpies will host Wolves in their season opener, with kickoff scheduled for 14:00 BST on 6 September, marking the beginning of what Nobbs and her teammates hope will be a successful push toward promotion this time around.
