The Cymru Premier, Wales' top football division, has secured a fresh broadcasting partnership with BBC Wales that will see selected league matches shown free-to-air over the next three years. The announcement coincides with a major shake-up of the competition as it enters its 35th season since being established in 1992.
Under the new agreement, BBC Wales will double the amount of free live coverage offered compared to the previous campaign, working alongside the league's existing streaming platform, Cymru Football TV, which continues to broadcast every fixture. The two outlets are intended to complement one another, giving fans a choice between watching the full schedule online or catching selected games on traditional television.
The league itself has undergone significant restructuring for the upcoming season. The number of participating clubs has grown from 12 to 16, with six sides earning promotion into the top flight: Llandudno, Airbus UK, Holywell Town, Trefelin BGC, Cambrian United and Ammanford. Alongside the expanded club list, the competition's scheduling has also shifted, with the majority of matches now set to be played on Friday evenings rather than the traditional weekend slots.
Jack Sharp, the Football Association of Wales' head of domestic leagues, welcomed the return of BBC coverage to Welsh domestic football, describing it as a meaningful part of the league's long-term development. "I am delighted to welcome the BBC back to Welsh domestic football through this new three-year partnership," Sharp said. Sharp also highlighted how the dual broadcasting approach is designed to serve different types of supporters. "By doubling our free live broadcast offering compared to last season, we have created a comprehensive broadcasting portfolio where Cymru Football TV and free-to-air coverage work together to serve different audiences," he said. "Whether supporters choose to watch every match through Cymru Football TV or enjoy selected fixtures on free-to-air television, more people than ever before will have the opportunity to connect with our clubs and competitions."
He further stressed the broader significance of having a national broadcaster involved in promoting the domestic game. "The BBC's commitment to Welsh domestic football will play an important role in increasing awareness of the league, attracting new audiences, and supporting our wider ambition to continue growing the game," Sharp added.
The expanded 16-team format and the new broadcasting arrangement mark one of the most substantial shifts in the league's recent history, as organizers look to raise its profile both domestically and further afield in the UK.
