Chelsea Hit by Fresh Injury Concern as Sarr Withdrawn Before Kick-off Amid Chalobah Exit

Chelsea's preparations for their friendly against Johor Darul Ta'zim at the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium were disrupted by a last-minute setback, with defender Mamadou Sarr pulled from the starting lineup shortly before kick-off.

Sarr had initially been named in Xabi Alonso's back line, but the club confirmed a late alteration was necessary, drafting in academy prospect Olutayo Subuloye as his replacement. Chelsea's statement offered little detail on the nature of the issue, simply confirming the change without elaborating on the severity of the problem.

"There has been a late change to the Chelsea starting XI against Johor Darul Ta'zim, with Olutayo Subuloye coming into the defence in place of Mamadou Sarr," the club said. "Sarr was initially included in the Blues' back line, but has now been replaced by Academy centre-back Subuloye."

As it stands, no further update has been provided regarding the 20-year-old's condition, leaving supporters and coaching staff alike in the dark over how serious the issue might be. The timing is particularly awkward given that Alonso had been due to sit down with the former Strasbourg captain to discuss his long-term future at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea had reportedly not closed the door on retaining Sarr for the upcoming campaign, but those conversations may now be put on hold until there is clarity on the extent of his injury.

The disruption did not end there for Chelsea. Aaron Anselmino became the club's second injury concern of the afternoon, forced off the pitch just before the half-hour mark. Details on his specific issue were similarly scarce, adding to a difficult day on the fitness front for Alonso's squad as they continue preparations away from home.

Amid the on-field disruptions, Chelsea also confirmed a significant departure from within their ranks. Trevoh Chalobah, a product of the club's academy system, has completed a permanent move to Serie A side Como. The transfer is reported to be worth an initial €30million (£25.7m), with a further €6million (£5.1m) available through performance-related add-ons.

Chalobah's exit brings to a close a near two-decade association with Chelsea, having progressed through the youth ranks before establishing himself in and around the first team in recent seasons. The west London club paid tribute to the defender following confirmation of the deal.

"Trevoh Chalobah has completed a permanent transfer to Como, bringing his time as a Chelsea player to an end after nearly two decades with the Blues," the statement read. "Everyone at Chelsea would like to thank Trev for his years of loyal service and wish him the very best in his next chapter in Italy."

The combination of the Chalobah sale and the uncertainty surrounding Sarr's fitness could have knock-on effects for Chelsea's defensive planning as the transfer window progresses. With Alonso still shaping his squad ahead of the new season, the club will be keen to establish the full picture on both Sarr and Anselmino as quickly as possible, particularly with defensive reinforcements and departures already shifting the make-up of the squad.

For now, attention turns to the results of any scans or assessments on the injured pair, with Chelsea's staff expected to provide further updates in the coming days as the club continues its preseason schedule.
