Assistant manager Shaun Maloney stepped in to lead the team for the fixture, taking on matchday duties in O'Neill's place. Despite being unable to attend the game itself, O'Neill made the effort to visit the squad at their team hotel before kick-off, addressing the players directly as he continues to regain his strength.
Celtic confirmed earlier in the week that their manager had undergone what the club described as a "small procedure" in hospital on Wednesday. He was discharged from care the following day and has been recuperating since, with the club expressing optimism about his progress.
Speaking to Sky Sports before the match at Rugby Park, Maloney offered an encouraging update on O'Neill's condition. "He is doing better again," the assistant manager said. "He came to the team hotel and spoke to the players but he just needs an extra few days. But he's good. He is definitely improving."
While O'Neill's health appears to be on the right track, Maloney acknowledged that his manager's presence would be sorely missed, particularly in terms of the impact he has on players in the build-up to and during matches. "It's been pretty similar this week," Maloney explained. "Where he comes into his own is match day, so we will definitely miss him but we will try our best to make it as good a level for the guys as it is under Martin."
O'Neill's current spell in charge at Celtic Park began in June when he agreed to a one-year contract, which includes the option of extending his stay for a further season. His return to management with the Hoops came after a previous interim spell in charge last season, during which he guided the club to a domestic double, further cementing his reputation among the Celtic faithful.
Despite his health setback, O'Neill has remained closely involved with the team throughout the early stages of the campaign. He was present in the Celtic Park dugout on Monday when the Hoops kicked off their league season with a narrow 1-0 victory over Dundee, a result that offered an encouraging, if unspectacular, start to the title defense.
