Guimarães's £75m Move to Arsenal Adds Midfield Muscle and Options for Arteta

Bruno Guimarães has completed a long-anticipated switch from Newcastle United to Arsenal in a deal worth £75m, ending more than four years on Tyneside and giving Mikel Arteta another elite option in the middle of the park. The 28-year-old Brazil international departs St James' Park following the earlier exits of Alexander Isak, Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali, and the recent departure of manager Eddie Howe, having reportedly concluded that a switch to a top club may not present itself again.

Describing his own game after being unveiled by Arsenal, Guimarães said: "I would say I can pass the ball, run a lot and play like a warrior. I'll never give up." That combative, tireless style became his trademark in the Premier League and endeared him to Newcastle's supporters during his time there.

The move brings closure to a pursuit that dates back to the early days of Arteta's tenure. Former sporting director Edu Gaspar first made enquiries about Guimarães while he was still playing for Athletico Paranaense in Brazil, prior to his 2020 move to Lyon. Arsenal also showed interest when Newcastle beat them to his signature in January 2022 for an initial €40m — a deal that proved costly when Guimarães scored against the Gunners in a 2-0 win that season, contributing to Arsenal's failure to qualify for the Champions League.

That goal remains the only one Guimarães has scored against Arsenal, but he consistently impressed against them in various midfield roles, including during Newcastle's 4-0 aggregate victory over Arsenal in the Carabao Cup semi-final earlier this year. Since his Premier League debut, no other player has covered more distance, won more duels, or committed more fouls against Arsenal than Guimarães.

Unsurprisingly, Declan Rice — the only player in the division to have logged more distance than Guimarães against Arsenal in that span — was among the first to greet his new teammate, joking in a message: "come here and please no more fights, now we're friends."

Arsenal's current sporting director, Andrea Berta, had also targeted Real Madrid forward Vinícius Júnior this summer, but that pursuit fell through after the Brazilian signed a new six-year contract with the Spanish club. Guimarães's arrival nonetheless strengthens what was already considered one of Europe's most formidable midfields last season.

With Rice having gone the distance in last season's Champions League campaign before representing England over the summer, and now managing neural pain in his hamstring and lower back since December, his workload will need careful management. Guimarães is expected to provide box-to-box cover for Rice rather than directly compete with him for a starting spot, while also offering Arteta the flexibility to rotate his midfield options more regularly.

The Brazilian has shown at Newcastle that he can operate effectively in deeper positions too — a trait that could prove valuable given how Arteta used teenager Myles Lewis-Skelly in a defensive midfield role during last season's title run and the Champions League final against Paris Saint-Germain in Budapest, despite Lewis-Skelly beginning the campaign as a left-back.

Elsewhere in Arsenal's midfield, Martin Ødegaard is looking to rediscover his best form after a season disrupted by injury, following an encouraging showing for Norway at the World Cup. Alongside Ødegaard and last summer's signing Eberechi Eze, Guimarães is expected to help unlock defenses that troubled Arsenal's attack with low blocks last season.

Arsenal are reportedly still looking to bolster their defensive options while William Saliba remains sidelined, and could pursue further attacking reinforcements following the signing of Christos Tzolis, with names such as Julián Alvarez and Bradley Barcola mentioned as possibilities. Guimarães, meanwhile, expressed enthusiasm about joining a squad that includes fellow Brazilian Gabriel, saying: "Big Gabi was very excited. Every time he sent me the message: 'We'll wait for you, when will you come?' I'm so excited to join them, not only the Brazilians, we have an amazing squad here. I just want to give my best."
