Patrick Vieira has been officially unveiled as the new head coach of Senegal, describing the appointment as a deeply personal milestone and "an absolute dream" during his introductory press conference in Dakar on Friday.
The 50-year-old, who was born in Senegal before moving to France as a child and going on to star for Les Bleus—winning the 1998 World Cup and Euro 2000—said accepting the position felt like a homecoming rather than just another job. "I was born here, my parents were born here, and it really is a homecoming," Vieira told reporters. He added that he committed to the role immediately after his first discussions with the Senegalese football federation, citing the talent within the current squad as a major draw.
This marks Vieira's first international management post after a club career that included spells at New York City FC, Nice, Crystal Palace, Strasbourg, and most recently Genoa, where he was dismissed in November 2025 following a poor start to the Serie A season despite having kept the club up the previous year. Reflecting on that experience, Vieira insisted he has grown from it. "I'm a better coach today than I was in my last spell at Genoa, because that experience helped me grow and made me realise certain things," he said, adding that he has "no doubt" about his ability to meet the expectations of Senegalese supporters.
Vieira replaces Pape Thiaw, who was dismissed after Senegal's turbulent exit from the 2026 World Cup qualifying process, most notably a last-32 collapse against Belgium in which the Teranga Lions surrendered a 2-0 lead in the closing minutes before losing 3-2 in extra time. That disappointment came despite Senegal's continental triumph earlier in the year, when they beat Morocco 1-0 in extra time to win the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. The final destination of that trophy remains uncertain, however, with the Court of Arbitration for Sport still to rule on the matter following a walkout by Senegalese players and staff during the final in protest of a penalty decision—an incident that saw the trophy provisionally awarded to host nation Morocco.
Acknowledging the weight of expectation now surrounding Senegalese football, Vieira stressed that his approach would build on the foundations already laid rather than start from scratch. "It's about respecting what the federation has put in place over the last few years and building the next stage, opening a new chapter," he explained, emphasizing that preserving the team's unity and resilience would remain central to his methods as he aims to instill a structured, intense style of play.
Vieira's tenure begins immediately with 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, starting with an away fixture against Mozambique on 25 September, before a follow-up trip to face Ethiopia four days later. The Dakar clash against Mozambique was originally scheduled to be Vieira's home debut but was switched due to the Senegalese capital's ongoing preparations to host the 2026 Youth Olympic Games. "Of course, I'd have preferred to play the first match here in Dakar, but... we all felt the best decision was to postpone the match and go and play in Mozambique," Vieira said.
The new coach will be without several key figures for the opening qualifiers. Longtime goalkeeper Edouard Mendy has retired from international duty, while forward Sadio Mane will miss out due to a minor physical issue, though Vieira suggested the veteran forward would return to the squad once fit. Right-back Krepin Diatta is unavailable as he remains without a club, and Crystal Palace forward Ismaila Sarr is sidelined by a groin injury and lack of match fitness.
Despite the challenges ahead, Vieira expressed gratitude for the reception he received upon arriving in Dakar, where fans greeted him enthusiastically at the airport. "I couldn't have been given a warmer welcome... Taking charge of this national team isn't just a new stage in my career—it's coming back home," he said.
