The United States men's national team appears to have lost its long-running battle to secure the international future of Noahkai Banks, one of the most promising dual-national defenders eligible to play for the Stars and Stripes.
Germany's under-21 head coach Antonio Di Salvo confirmed the development by naming the 19-year-old in his squad for the upcoming U-21 European Championship qualifiers. In an official team release, Di Salvo stated that Banks and fellow dual national Louey Ben Farhat have "chosen to represent Germany."
Banks was born in Honolulu to an American father and a German mother, giving him the option to represent either nation. Up to this point, he had only featured for United States youth sides, including an appearance at the 2023 U-17 World Cup. Because that tournament was an official FIFA competition, Banks will still need to formally file a one-time association switch before he can officially commit to Germany at senior level.
"We've been in contact with [Banks and Ben Farhat] for a while now and had focused our efforts on them," Di Salvo said. "I'm very pleased that we have been able to lay out a future pathway with Germany for them and that they agreed with it."
Banks has emerged as one of the most exciting young center-backs in the Bundesliga over the past year while playing for FC Augsburg. He made 23 league appearances last season, nearly all as a starter, and has continued that form this campaign, playing the full 90 minutes in all four of Augsburg's matches so far.
His rise did not go unnoticed by USMNT boss Mauricio Pochettino, who called Banks into the senior squad in September for friendlies against South Korea and Japan. Banks did not see the field in either match, as the U.S. lost 2-0 to South Korea before beating Japan by the same score.
According to a report from ESPN, Banks had already turned down an invitation to join the U.S. camp during the March international window, the last one before the 2026 World Cup. Despite that, many within U.S. Soccer circles viewed Banks as a genuine option for Pochettino's World Cup roster, given the national team's thin depth at center-back and a shortage of elite young talent emerging through the pipeline at that position.
Speaking to German outlet Bild, Banks had indicated he wanted to delay his decision. "I told both [the US and Germany] that I just wanted to concentrate on the start of the season now," he said. "But I know that I have to decide by the next international break or at the latest by the international break after next."
Pochettino addressed the situation earlier this month, telling reporters that the federation had maintained contact with Banks and other dual-national players, adding that Banks was "still in the same situation that [he] was before the World Cup when we talked."
Had he opted for the United States, Banks likely would have been included in the squad for the upcoming four-match international window, a roster in which Pochettino has shown a willingness to lean on youth, including the inclusion of 18-year-old Philadelphia Union defender Neil Pierre.
Interestingly, Banks still lists the USMNT in the bio of his official Instagram account, though that detail seems likely to be updated in the near future as his international allegiance moves toward Germany.
