Chelsea will wear their newly designed Nike away kit for the first time in a competitive fixture when they travel to face Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium, the club has confirmed.
The strip had already been showcased during pre-season, appearing in the friendly defeat to Tottenham Hotspur in Sydney, Australia, but this weekend's Premier League encounter marks its first outing in an official match.
Describing the new design, a club statement explained that the away kit shares several design elements with this season's home shirt. "Our next match away at Brentford will see Chelsea's 2026/27 Nike away kit making its competitive debut on the pitch, after previously being worn in the pre-season friendly against Tottenham Hotspur in Australia," the statement read. It continued: "Our away strip mirrors many of the features of the home shirt on a black base, with the same Midwest Gold trim and laurel wreath motif appearing prominently around the neck and cuffs, as well as the golden socks."
The timing of the kit's competitive introduction comes at the end of a hectic period both on and off the pitch for the west London club. Under new manager Xabi Alonso, Chelsea underwent a significant summer overhaul, bringing in a host of fresh faces including Morgan Rogers, Valentin Barco, Danny Welbeck, Maxence Lacroix, Geovany Quenda, Emiliano Martinez and Pep Chavarria.
Not all of these new arrivals have yet featured for the first team, however. Several were sent out on loan before the transfer window shut, while three of the summer signings—Jordan Henderson, Marco Palestra and Emmanuel Emegha—are still waiting to make their competitive debuts for the Blues.
As for the on-field superstitions, some fans may view the away kit's earlier appearance with a degree of caution. When Chelsea sported the new strip during their pre-season meeting with Tottenham in Sydney, they suffered a 2-1 defeat, with the club's only goal coming from Estevao at the Accor Stadium.
Alonso's team will be eager to avoid a repeat of that result as they head to Brentford looking to arrest a mild dip in form. Chelsea have struggled for defensive solidity in their last two Premier League matches, dropping points against both Arsenal and Hull City while conceding two goals in each fixture.
The match against Brentford also holds added significance as it represents Chelsea's last fixture before an extended international break disrupts the domestic calendar. Once football resumes, the Blues face a demanding run of fixtures, starting with home matches against Bournemouth, Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United. October will also see Chelsea travel to Merseyside twice, first for a Premier League trip to Everton and later for a Carabao Cup meeting with Liverpool.
With the new season kit now set for its full unveiling in a competitive setting, focus will shift to whether Alonso's revamped squad can find the results to match the fresh look. A win over Brentford would go some way to steadying the ship following back-to-back draws, or losses, that have seen the Blues concede regularly in recent weeks.
