Kevin Miller, who spent nearly two decades as a professional goalkeeper in English football before moving into coaching, has died at the age of 57.
Miller passed away unexpectedly overnight on Tuesday. At the time of his death he was serving as goalkeeping coach at Wigan Athletic, a role he had taken up during the summer after linking up once again with manager Gary Caldwell, for whom he previously worked at Exeter City. He had left his post as Exeter's goalkeeping coach in June before making the move to the Latics.
Born in Cornwall, Miller began his football journey in the non-league ranks with Newquay and Falmouth Town before earning a move to Exeter City in 1989. He went on to make around 200 appearances for the Grecians, playing a key role in their fourth-tier title triumph.
A switch to Birmingham City followed in 1993 for a single season, after which Miller spent three years with Watford. In 1997 he completed a £1.5million transfer to Crystal Palace, then a Premier League club. He was an ever-present for the Eagles the following season, appearing in all 38 league matches as Palace suffered relegation from the top flight. He remained the club's first-choice goalkeeper in the Championship the year after, helping Palace to a 14th-place finish.
Miller left Selhurst Park in 1999 to join Barnsley, where he spent three years, before returning to Exeter City for the 2002-03 season. His playing career later took him to Bristol Rovers for two seasons, followed by brief stints at Southampton and Torquay United. He also had a spell in his home county with Bodmin Town before retiring, having amassed 738 professional appearances across his career.
Wigan Athletic paid tribute to Miller in a statement released on the club's website, describing how he had quickly won over staff and colleagues despite his short time at the club. "Although Kevin's time with Latics was far too short, he quickly became a much-loved and respected member of our first team staff," the statement read. "His experience, professionalism and passion for goalkeeping were clear for all to see, while his uplifting personality made a lasting impression on everyone who had the privilege of working alongside him."
The club added: "Kevin's contribution to football was significant, but for those who worked alongside him, it was the person he was that will be remembered most. Kevin was a husband, father, hugely respected colleague, dedicated coach and someone who made a genuine impact on those around him, both on and off the pitch. His sudden passing has left everyone at the club deeply saddened and devastated. Our thoughts and prayers are with Kevin's wife, Fiona, daughter, Esme, close family, friends, colleagues and all who knew and loved him."
Exeter City also released a tribute honouring their former player and coach, noting that Miller had earned "a place in the hearts of supporters with his performances between the posts and his wholehearted commitment to the club." The statement continued: "As a player, Kevin had a commanding presence and a fierce competitive spirit. At just 57, his passing is a huge loss to his family, friends and everyone who knew him."
The League Two club extended its condolences to Miller's family and friends, as well as to Caldwell and the staff at Wigan Athletic, and confirmed it would find a fitting way to honour his memory and legacy at the club.
