Manchester United are determined to keep hold of highly rated academy winger JJ Gabriel after he unexpectedly asked the club to cancel his registration, a move that would allow him to leave as a free agent.
The request has reportedly stunned officials at Old Trafford, coming just days before United were due to include the teenager in their first-team matchday squad for Wednesday's Carabao Cup fixture against Brighton. Those plans are now understood to be in doubt following his decision.
Gabriel has spent almost his entire footballing life at United, having joined the club's academy at just 11 years old.
