Bournemouth's search for a first Premier League win under Marco Rose goes on after a Djordje Petrovic blunder allowed Kevin Schade to complete a second-half brace and secure a 2-2 draw for Brentford at the Vitality Stadium.
The Cherries had led twice during a frantic afternoon but were pegged back on both occasions, extending a troubling trend under their new German head coach. It is now four successive league matches in which Bournemouth have surrendered a winning position since Rose took charge in the summer.
Brentford, unbeaten and now on six points from four games after a third straight draw, showed the resilience that has become a hallmark of Keith Andrews' side. The Bees fielded 20-year-old Jannik Schuster in central defence in place of the absent Nathan Collins, and the youngster more than held his own despite a tough examination from Bournemouth's Brazilian forward Evanilson.
Bournemouth were architects of their own downfall early on, with Antonio Silva heading a golden chance wide from six yards after a Marcus Tavernier free-kick found him unmarked. The profligacy set the tone for a day littered with missed opportunities on the south coast.
Brentford made them pay in the 34th minute when Yegor Yarmolyuk's cross from the right was headed home by Schade, the ball squirming in off the post despite Petrovic getting a touch. Bournemouth's misfortune continued moments later when Rayan somehow blazed over an open goal after Caoimhin Kelleher had parried the initial effort into his path.
Despite the miss, Bournemouth levelled just before the break through Justin Kluivert, who spun away from his marker and fired through the legs of Jaidon Anthony after the ball broke loose from a challenge on Evanilson. Brentford felt aggrieved not to be awarded a penalty in first-half stoppage time when Kristoffer Ajer's shot struck the falling Adrien Truffert, but referee Jarred Gillett waved away the appeals following a VAR check.
Bournemouth continued to press after the interval and were rewarded in the 52nd minute when Evanilson's clever lay-off, following a searching pass from Silva, teed up Tavernier to drill a finish into the bottom corner.
The lead lasted only four minutes. James Hill's back-pass to Petrovic was scuffed straight into the path of Schade, who calmly lifted the ball into an empty net for his second of the game and Brentford's leveller.
