Alonso Likens Chelsea's Joao Pedro to Real Madrid Legend Benzema

By LiveScore365 Newsroom · Premier League Chelsea

Chelsea head coach Xabi Alonso has offered high praise for Joao Pedro, drawing comparisons between the club's forward and former Real Madrid great Karim Benzema.

Joao Pedro, who joined Chelsea for a fee reported at £60 million, has emerged as one of the most impressive attacking talents in the Premier League this season. Alonso, who spent several years playing alongside Benzema at the Santiago Bernabeu, believes the Brazilian shares many of the same qualities that made the Frenchman one of the finest strikers of his generation.

Speaking about his forward, Alonso pointed to Joao Pedro's all-round game as the key similarity between the two players.

"As a profile of striker, he seems to be able to do everything. He reminds me of (Karim) Benzema because he's good in the box, he's good out of the box, he's good coming to the left side, good with the head," Alonso said. "He's very complete. He's intelligent."

Benzema, who won multiple Champions League titles and a Ballon d'Or during his time in Madrid, was renowned for his versatility, technical quality, and footballing intelligence. Alonso's comparison places Joao Pedro in rarefied company, but the Chelsea boss made clear he sees genuine substance behind the praise rather than simple hyperbole.

The Spaniard also highlighted the character and professionalism the forward has shown since his move to Stamford Bridge, suggesting his mentality has been just as impressive as his footballing output.

"He's been top, not just football-wise but personality-wise, his maturity," Alonso said. "He has a very strong goal this year: to have a great season, to score many goals, to be a [Player of the Month] nominee not just this month, but for more months."

Alonso added that while he was pleased with Joao Pedro's development, he was not entirely caught off guard by his form, given the qualities he had already identified in the player.

"I'm really not surprised, but am really happy with the kind of player that we have with Joao," he said.

Despite the glowing assessment, Alonso was careful to note that Joao Pedro, still a young player, has room to grow further. The coach suggested there are still aspects of his game that need refining, even as he continues to stand out as one of the league's most complete forwards.

"So yes, he's still young, and he still has things to develop, but he has many absolutely outstanding qualities," Alonso said.

The comparison to Benzema is likely to raise expectations around Joao Pedro's role at Chelsea, particularly given Alonso's first-hand experience playing alongside the Frenchman during his own career at Real Madrid. Benzema went on to become one of the most decorated forwards in the club's history, finishing as one of Europe's most consistent goal-scorers over more than a decade.

For now, Joao Pedro's task will be to continue building on his strong start under Alonso, with the manager clearly viewing him as a central figure in Chelsea's attacking plans both this season and beyond. Should he continue his current trajectory, the parallels drawn by his coach may only grow stronger as the campaign progresses.
