Xabi Alonso Urges Patience as Marco Palestra Nears Chelsea Return

By LiveScore365 Newsroom · Premier League Chelsea

Chelsea head coach Xabi Alonso has revealed the advice he has given to young defender Marco Palestra as the Italian works his way back from a quad injury that has kept him sidelined since before the start of the Premier League season.

Palestra arrived at Stamford Bridge from Atalanta over the summer and quickly caught the eye during pre-season, impressing both on Chelsea's tour of south-east Asia and in subsequent training sessions back in west London. However, his momentum was halted when he picked up a quad injury in the buildup to the club's league opener at Fulham, delaying what would have been his competitive debut for the Blues.

Three weeks on, Palestra is reportedly in the final stages of his recovery, though his exact return date remains uncertain. Alonso addressed the timeline directly, saying: "The injury is something on the quad. He's almost in the last stages of the recovery, so we will see. If [he is] not [fit for] Brentford, then Bournemouth for sure."

The Spanish coach acknowledged that the setback has been a source of real frustration for the teenager, who had hoped to build on his encouraging pre-season form with an immediate impact in England's top flight. According to Alonso, Palestra's eagerness to get back on the pitch required a calming influence from the coaching staff.

"He's quite frustrated after a very good pre-season not to be able to play and to make his debut in the Premier League," Alonso said. "But I told Marco, 'Easy, the season is long, there will be a lot of games, and you will play your role, you will have your minutes, you will enjoy your game.' He is full of energy, and you need to control that."

The message to Palestra reflects a broader shift in approach from Alonso regarding player fitness and recovery timelines at Chelsea. The club has already experienced the consequences of pushing players back into action too soon this campaign. Midfielder Moises Caicedo suffered an injury of his own late in pre-season, which forced him to miss Chelsea's opening two Premier League fixtures. When he was eventually brought off the bench against Brighton, Caicedo lasted just 14 minutes before being withdrawn again, a setback that appears to have reinforced Alonso's determination to be more careful going forward.

With that experience fresh in mind, Alonso seems intent on avoiding a similar situation with Palestra, even if it means the young defender must wait a little longer before making his first appearance in Chelsea colors. The coach's comments suggest that rather than rushing him into contention for the trip to Brentford, the club may prefer to target the following fixture against Bournemouth as a more realistic return point, assuming Palestra continues to progress as expected.

For Palestra, who joined Chelsea with high expectations after a promising spell at Atalanta, the wait to make his Premier League bow has undoubtedly tested his patience. But Alonso's message is clear: with a long season ahead and plenty of opportunities still to come, there is no need to gamble on a premature return. Instead, the emphasis remains on ensuring the 19-year-old is fully fit before he is thrown into competitive action for his new club.
