Azerbaijani champions Sabah FK will make Champions League history this week when they face Manchester United at Old Trafford, becoming the youngest club ever to compete in the competition's top tier. Founded only in 2017, Sabah's rapid rise to European football's grandest stage represents a remarkable achievement for a side that plays its home matches at the modest 9,000-capacity Bank Respublika Arena in Mazasir.
Sabah are only the second Azerbaijani club to reach the Champions League proper, following in the footsteps of Qarabag. Their route to this milestone was far from straightforward. After claiming the Azerbaijani league title last season - finishing nine points clear of Qarabag - Sabah still had to negotiate the qualifying rounds. They battled through four ties in total, with the most recent coming against Israeli side Hapoel Beer-Sheva, a tie they won in extra time to secure their place among Europe's elite.
Domestically, Sabah have carried that momentum into the new season under head coach Valdas Dambrauskas, winning all three of their opening league fixtures without conceding a goal, once again sitting atop the Azerbaijani Premyer Liqa table.
The squad blends experience with youth and boasts a mix of nationalities. Between the posts is veteran Kazakhstan international Stas Pokatilov, who joined the club two years ago and brings previous Champions League experience from his time at Rostov. In defence, centre-back Steve Solvet has shown an eye for goal, netting five times in 30 appearances for the club, while fellow centre-back Rahman Dashdamirov has earned nine caps for Azerbaijan.
The full-back positions feature Tymoteusz Puchacz, who racked up 82 appearances for Lech Poznan including ten in European competition, and experienced Algerian international Akim Zedadka. Umarali Rakhmonaliev, who made his loan move permanent in January, adds further depth after earning a cap for Uzbekistan.
In midfield, Aleksey Isaev - born in Russia but capped by Azerbaijan - brings experience from his time at rivals Qarabag, where he made 54 appearances, despite never making his debut at Zenit St Petersburg. Croatian Under-21 international Ivan Lepinjica, a towering presence at 6'3", offers physicality in the middle of the park.
Up front, Sabah possess proven goalscoring threats. Jamaican international Kaheem Parris previously spent time with Ukrainian side Dynamo Kyiv, though he managed just 13 appearances across two seasons there. German-born forward Joy-Lance Mickels, who returned to the club in 2024, was the standout performer in Sabah's title-winning campaign, netting 19 league goals. Winger Veljko Simic, best remembered for a productive spell at Red Star Belgrade where he scored 15 goals in 62 appearances across all competitions, also contributed 11 goals to Sabah's championship run last season.
The fixture itself falls during an unusual scheduling quirk in the European football calendar. Manchester United's clash with Sabah is among several Champions League matches taking place on a Thursday this week, alongside fixtures involving Bayern Munich and Roma. This is due to a dedicated exclusive round set aside for the Champions League each season since the competition's format overhaul for 2024-25, with games spread across Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday and no Europa League or Conference League fixtures competing for attention. This particular exclusive week has been assigned to the opening round of the league phase, spanning 8-10 September, though supporters can expect a return to the more familiar Tuesday-Wednesday Champions League slate for the remainder of the season.
