The first-half strike was his 71st goal in the competition from just 99 appearances, lifting him level with Real Madrid icon Raul Gonzalez in fifth position on the tournament's all-time scoring list.
The achievement comes after Mbappe finished as the leading scorer in last season's Champions League, the 2025-26 edition, before this latest goal pushed him further up the historical rankings. Remarkably, only twelve players in the competition's history have managed to score 50 or more goals, and Mbappe reached that half-century faster than all but five of them.
At the very top of the all-time standings remains Cristiano Ronaldo, whose tally of 140 Champions League goals stands as one of football's most imposing records. Lionel Messi trails him in second place with 129 goals. Both players have since departed Europe's top leagues, meaning their numbers are effectively frozen and unlikely to be surpassed by either man again.
Robert Lewandowski occupies third spot in the all-time list but, like Ronaldo and Messi, will not add to his total after leaving Barcelona for a move to Chicago Fire in Major League Soccer. Karim Benzema, the 2022 Ballon d'Or winner, sits fourth on the list but is presently without a club as a free agent, leaving his future involvement in the competition uncertain.
That leaves Mbappe, now tied with Raul—who retired from the professional game back in 2015—as the only active player among the top five still competing in a position to meaningfully add to his Champions League goal count. Should he continue scoring at a high rate, the Real Madrid forward has a genuine opportunity to eventually challenge Ronaldo's benchmark, though doing so would require him to roughly double his current output over the remainder of his career.
While Mbappe's consistency has been notable, it is Manchester City's Erling Haaland who holds the record for reaching the 50-goal mark in the fastest time. The Norwegian striker needed only 49 appearances to hit that tally, averaging just over a goal per game—a pace that puts him 13 games clear of any other player in Champions League history. Given the lack of any current challengers approaching that rate, Haaland's record looks set to remain unbroken for the foreseeable future.
Haaland currently sits just behind Mbappe on the overall scoring list and, being a year younger than the Frenchman, is regarded as another serious long-term candidate to eventually surpass Ronaldo's record if his scoring form in Europe's premier club competition continues at its current trajectory.
With both Mbappe and Haaland still in the early-to-middle stages of their careers, the race to eventually dethrone Ronaldo as the Champions League's all-time top scorer appears likely to play out between the two forwards over the coming seasons, barring the emergence of any new contenders.
