Leeds United are waiting anxiously on the fitness of Daniel James before their upcoming clash with Chelsea, after the winger picked up a fresh injury scare over the weekend.
James felt discomfort in his hamstring and back while warming up before Leeds' 1-1 draw away at Brighton on Saturday, forcing him to remain an unused substitute for the entirety of the match at the Amex Stadium.
Manager Daniel Farke offered a cautiously positive update on the winger's condition following the game, revealing that initial scans had not detected any new damage.
"The scan results were good, so it seems like no new injury," Farke said. "If he comes through two more sessions, hopefully he's available. A little question mark, but I'm cautiously optimistic."
While James' participation remains uncertain, his absence from the matchday squad against Brighton opened the door for three of Leeds' summer recruits to push for involvement. Goalkeeper Michael Zetterer, forward Jean-Matteo Bahoya and defender Melvin Bard all sat on the bench without being called upon during the Premier League fixture, and all three could be in line to make their first appearances for the club when Leeds travel to face Chelsea.
Farke stopped short of confirming whether the trio would be handed their debuts, preferring to maintain an element of unpredictability ahead of the encounter with the Blues. However, he made clear that squad rotation is very much on his mind given the quick turnaround between fixtures.
"Yes, first of all I trust my whole squad and there's always a chance for changes," the German coach explained. "We want to be difficult to predict and flexible and there's a chance right now to rotate a bit in this relatively quick turnaround."
Despite viewing the cup competition as a route to potential silverware and European qualification, Farke was quick to stress that Leeds' primary focus this season remains survival and consolidation in the Premier League.
"We'll try to win it. It's the quickest way into Europe and some glory. But the Premier League will always have the priority, to establish ourselves at this level," he said.
The Leeds boss was also realistic about his side's chances of lifting the trophy, acknowledging that they enter the competition as underdogs against many of the division's bigger clubs. Nevertheless, he insisted his team would travel to London with genuine ambitions of progressing to the next round.
"We're not the favourites to win the Carabao Cup, of course we know this, but we'll travel to London in order to go through to the next round," Farke added.
With a congested fixture list ahead, the Leeds manager suggested that squad depth will be tested and fresh faces given opportunities to prove themselves. "We have to rotate a bit more and integrate a few new players, but we want to be at our best and go through," he stated, hinting that Zetterer, Bahoya and Bard could all feature against Xabi Alonso's Chelsea side.
The uncertainty surrounding James' fitness, combined with Farke's willingness to freshen up his lineup, adds an intriguing subplot to the meeting between the two clubs, with the Leeds manager eager to balance squad rotation with the need to remain competitive against Premier League opposition.
