Loris Karius produced the performance of his career revival as Schalke frustrated Bayern Munich in a goalless draw at home on Saturday, a result that ended Bayern's brief spell atop the Bundesliga table and marked the club's first top-flight home fixture since May 2023.
The match was billed in advance as the return of Manuel Neuer to Gelsenkirchen, the town where he grew up and began his career before departing for Bayern 15 years ago. Schalke supporters greeted their former goalkeeper with jeers throughout, prompting Bayern sporting director Max Eberl to describe the treatment as "inappropriate," while Schalke's own sporting director, Frank Baumann, voiced disapproval of his club's fans. Neuer himself took a more relaxed view of the reception. "That's love," he said. "Every whistle is a compliment."
Despite the pre-match focus on Neuer, it was the opposing goalkeeper who ultimately defined the contest. Karius, now 33, delivered a commanding display capped by a spectacular one-handed save to deny Harry Kane a late winner. It was a stunning reversal of fortune for a player whose career had been defined more by misfortune than success since his error-strewn performance for Liverpool in the 2018 Champions League final against Real Madrid in Kyiv—errors later linked to a concussion he suffered earlier in that match.
Karius's path back to relevance has been anything but smooth. A move to Besiktas ended in acrimony after he had to take legal action twice over unpaid wages, and a subsequent loan to Union Berlin yielded just four Bundesliga appearances. Between leaving Istanbul in 2020 and an emergency call-up for Newcastle against Arsenal in February 2024—after Martin Dubravka fell ill on matchday—he barely featured for any club. Reflecting on that period of his career earlier this year, Karius told German outlet Welt: "Even today, I don't know what I should have done differently. I just felt empty. I even considered ending my career, but I was only 25 years old and couldn't just stay home."
He arrived at Schalke in January 2025 as a nominal second-choice option under then-coach Kees van Wonderen, but injury limited him to just four appearances that season. It was under current manager Miron Muslić that Karius truly re-established himself, starting 30 of 34 league matches last season as Schalke conceded a league-low 31 goals en route to winning the 2. Bundesliga title. His contract was extended again this summer, through 2028.
Saturday's clean sheet against the champions represented a new peak in that resurgence. Notably, Bayern were without both Kane and Michael Olise from the start, though Jamal Musiala did appear from the bench. Manager Vincent Kompany has previously used late substitutions of his two most dangerous attackers to exploit tiring defenses, but on this occasion, Karius had an answer for everything Bayern produced. Muslić embraced his goalkeeper after the final whistle, and Kompany—who knew Karius from their days together at Manchester City—also greeted him warmly.
The draw leaves Bayern in sixth place with four points from two matches, their first weekend outside the top of the table in almost two years, following a run in which they had not failed to score domestically since a goalless draw at Bayer Leverkusen over 18 months ago. Schalke, meanwhile, sit 14th with a single point, but Karius's performance offered clear encouragement after a heavy 3-0 defeat at Augsburg the previous week.
Elsewhere in the Bundesliga, Borussia Dortmund maintained a perfect record with a dramatic comeback win at Hoffenheim, while Augsburg and Freiburg occupy the top two spots. Bayer Leverkusen picked up their first points of the season with a 4-0 win over Union Berlin, and Werder Bremen upset RB Leipzig 3-1.
