Brighton & Hove Albion salvaged a 1-1 draw against Leeds United at the Amex Stadium on Saturday, with record signing Luka Vuskovic scoring his first goal in English football to cancel out an early opener from Jayden Bogle.
Daniel Farke's Leeds side, unbeaten in their previous outings, looked set to claim victory after taking the lead in the 15th minute. Goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen initially denied Dominic Calvert-Lewin from a Nico Elvedi cross, but Japan international Ao Tanaka reacted quickest to turn the loose ball back into the box, allowing right-back Bogle to convert from close range.
Brighton, missing several key attacking players including Jack Hinshelwood, Kaoru Mitoma, Yankuba Minteh and former Leeds forward Georginio Rutter, struggled to generate any real threat in the opening period and looked vulnerable defensively. Leeds pushed to extend their advantage, and Calvert-Lewin came close to doubling the lead in the 23rd minute when he rounded Verbruggen after being played through, only for Lewis Dunk to clear the ball off the line with a desperate sliding challenge.
Leeds continued to create chances from set pieces. From the resulting corner, Tanaka's volley bounced awkwardly off the turf and struck the crossbar. Brighton's best opportunity of the half came when Diego Gomez struck a volley straight at Leeds goalkeeper James Trafford, but the hosts went into the break trailing, met by boos from a frustrated home crowd.
The visitors continued to look the more threatening side after the restart. Anton Stach's low effort was saved by Verbruggen's boot shortly after halftime, and Brighton were fortunate to escape further damage when Tanaka had what would have been a second goal ruled out for offside following a video review, after volleying home from a Stach free-kick.
Brighton, who had scored 11 goals in their previous three matches across all competitions, needed to find their attacking form. Pascal Gross curled an effort narrowly wide, while Charalampos Kostoulas dribbled past several defenders only to fire a tame shot straight at Trafford. Calvert-Lewin was booked in this period for catching Yasin Ayari with a raised arm.
The increased pressure from Brighton eventually paid dividends in the 71st minute. After Trafford had tipped away an effort from substitute Malick Yalcouye, Maxim De Cuyper whipped in a dangerous corner from the right, and £46 million summer signing Vuskovic, who arrived from Tottenham Hotspur, rose highest at the back post to head home the equalizer.
Brighton pushed for a winner in the closing stages. Manager Fabian Hurzeler will have been frustrated when Gross fired over the crossbar from inside the box in the 89th minute after good work to create the chance. Leeds also had a late opportunity to snatch victory, with substitute Lukas Nmecha going close in the final moments, but the match finished level.
The draw leaves Leeds on five points from their opening three Premier League fixtures of the season, sitting one point above Brighton, who continue to search for greater consistency amid their injury concerns going forward.
