Rangers secured a hard-fought 1-0 win over Motherwell at Ibrox on Saturday, extending their winning run in the Scottish Premiership to three matches, though the result was overshadowed by a worrying injury to captain Lawrence Shankland.
The Scotland international was forced off after just eight minutes with a hamstring problem, and manager Derek McInnes later admitted he fears the setback could keep his skipper out for a significant period. Shankland's withdrawal proved decisive in an unexpected way, as his replacement Ryan Naderi struck the game's only goal within minutes of coming on.
Naderi capitalised on a costly error from Motherwell goalkeeper Alex Paulsen, who was caught in possession as he attempted to dribble past the German forward just outside his own penalty area. With Paulsen out of position, Naderi had a simple finish to roll the ball into an empty net in the 12th minute, handing Rangers the lead they would not relinquish.
Despite falling behind so early, Motherwell enjoyed the majority of possession and fashioned several opportunities to level the score. However, Rangers proved sharper in the final third and arguably should have extended their advantage. Kim Min-su failed to convert from the penalty spot in the first half, while substitute Kevin Kelsy, making his debut for the club, also squandered promising chances after being introduced from the bench. Rangers held firm defensively in the closing stages to avoid any late drama and claim the three points.
The post-match focus, though, centred on Shankland's fitness. The 30-year-old, who joined Rangers from Hearts in May, has been in strong form this season, netting four goals in his opening 10 appearances for the club. His early exit from Saturday's match has raised serious concerns given the nature of the injury.
McInnes drew comparisons to a similar injury Shankland suffered while at Hearts in January, which sidelined him for approximately two months.
