Portsmouth head coach John Mousinho issued an apology to Cardiff City following an ugly scene involving supporters during his side's 2-0 Championship victory over the Bluebirds at Fratton Park.
The incident occurred in the 72nd minute when Cardiff defender Krystian Bielik became embroiled in a physical altercation with a home fan while attempting to retrieve the ball near the touchline. Footage that spread quickly on social media appeared to show the Poland international grabbing a young supporter around the upper body, while a number of Portsmouth fans in the vicinity gestured as though they believed the supporter had been seized around the throat.
Cardiff head coach Brian Barry-Murphy gave his own account of events afterward, insisting that Bielik had been struck by the fan. According to Barry-Murphy, his player "got slapped in the face" during the confrontation, prompting the defender's reaction.
The situation escalated further in the aftermath of the clash when another supporter threw an object—a ball—at the head of Cardiff defender Perry Ng. Stadium officials responded swiftly, and both fans involved in the separate incidents were removed from the ground.
Speaking to reporters after the final whistle, Mousinho addressed the disorder directly, revealing that the match officials had provided an explanation for what triggered the confrontation. "The referee said that, as Krystian went to get the ball, there was a little bit of a kerfuffle and one of the supporters struck him," the Portsmouth boss said. "It wasn't a good incident. I have just seen him there, and he was OK, but that's not the point, we can't be having that."
Mousinho acknowledged that Fratton Park has developed a reputation as an intimidating venue for visiting teams in recent seasons, a factor he believes has contributed positively to Portsmouth's home form. However, he stressed there are limits to what should be tolerated from supporters. "We want to create a really difficult atmosphere at Fratton Park, we have done that successfully over the past few years," he explained. "Sometimes it tips over, I understand that, I don't think it needs to tip over to that extent."
The head coach went on to extend a formal apology on behalf of the club, directing his comments toward both the Cardiff players and the visiting club as a whole. "We extend our apologies to the players, Cardiff and make sure we can try to cut it out," Mousinho added, signaling that measures would be considered to prevent similar incidents from recurring at the stadium.
Despite the off-field drama, Portsmouth's on-field performance secured them a comfortable 2-0 win over their Championship rivals, continuing what has been a strong home record for the south coast club.
