Real Madrid defender Raul Asencio has been acquitted in a court case on the Spanish island of Gran Canaria that centered on the alleged sharing of a video containing sexual content without the consent of those involved.
According to the court, prosecutors withdrew the charges against Asencio during proceedings after the alleged victims informed the court that they had forgiven those involved. Asencio had faced accusations solely related to sharing the video, distinguishing his case from that of three other former Real Madrid youth players who stood trial alongside him.
Those three players were accused of recording and distributing sexually explicit videos involving two teenage women, one of whom was a minor at the time. The court handed down one-year prison sentences to each of them, though these were suspended provided they do not commit further offenses during that period. Prosecutors had also reduced their sentencing requests for these three defendants following the victims' statements of forgiveness.
The legal resolution of this case comes amid a separate, unrelated legal matter for Asencio. The same week, another court fined the defender €14,400 (approximately $16,800) and imposed an eight-month driving ban after he was caught driving under the influence of alcohol.
Real Madrid manager José Mourinho addressed the situation on Thursday, confirming that the club had launched internal disciplinary proceedings against Asencio in response to the off-field controversies. However, Mourinho made clear that the defender would continue to be considered part of the squad while the club's internal review takes its course.
The Portuguese coach did not hide his frustration with the pattern of incidents surrounding the young defender.
