Deadline Day has come and gone, with Premier League clubs setting a new spending record of £3.49billion this summer, surpassing last year's £3.14billion mark. Iliman Ndiaye's £60m switch from Everton to Manchester City was among the final pieces of business to push English top-flight spending past that historic threshold, with three of the ten most expensive transfers in football history completed during this window.
Yet despite the frenzy of activity and eye-watering fees changing hands, a host of recognizable names remain without a club, available to any side willing to take a chance on faded stars or players seeking a fresh start.
In goal, Sergio Rico stands out as an experienced option. The 6ft 5in Spaniard made over 170 appearances for Sevilla, winning the Europa League twice, before earning a move to Paris Saint-Germain in 2019. Now 33, he remains a free agent.
Defensively, David Alaba headlines the list following his departure from Real Madrid. The 34-year-old Austrian made more than 80 appearances in the Spanish capital and collected four major trophies, though injuries frequently disrupted his time there. Alongside him, Diogo Leite offers a younger alternative at 27, having progressed through Porto's ranks before making 85 appearances for Union Berlin and representing Portugal at under-21 level.
Oleksandr Zinchenko is another notable name still searching for a club. The Ukrainian, just 29, is well known to Premier League followers from his spells at Manchester City and Arsenal, and has scored 12 goals in 75 caps for his country.
In midfield, the list includes two players whose careers have taken difficult turns. Paul Pogba, a World Cup winner with France and a European Cup winner with Manchester United and Juventus during his career, served a doping ban before being given a lifeline at Monaco. That deal was not renewed beyond the 2025-26 season, leaving the Frenchman without a club once again. Dele Alli's situation is similarly uncertain — the former Tottenham and England international has not played for a club since September 2025, when a brief stint at Como ended with a red card against AC Milan in his only appearance.
Riyad Mahrez remains available too. Now in his mid-thirties, the Algerian rose to prominence at Leicester City, where he won both the Premier League title and the PFA Players' Player of the Year award in 2016, before enjoying further success at Manchester City. He has also scored 40 goals for Algeria on the international stage.
Up front, several once-electric talents are also without clubs. Raheem Sterling, who began his career at Liverpool playing alongside Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge before establishing himself at Manchester City, has struggled to find stability since leaving City in 2022, including a spell in the Netherlands that did not go to plan. Jadon Sancho, still only 26 and blessed with obvious talent, has similarly failed to settle, having represented four top clubs since 2021.
Philippe Coutinho is another attacker on the list. The Brazilian left Liverpool for Barcelona in 2018 in what he described as "a very tough decision," but his career has not reached the same heights since.
Perhaps the most decorated name of all is Karim Benzema. The 38-year-old Frenchman won the Ballon d'Or during an illustrious career at Real Madrid, scoring 275 goals in nearly 550 appearances for the club and winning numerous trophies before departing for the Saudi Pro League in 2023.
With the transfer window now closed, clubs facing injury crises or squad shortages may find late solutions among this group of proven performers still waiting for their next opportunity.
