Enzo Fernandez sealed a dramatic transfer to Manchester City on deadline day, leaving Chelsea in a £125 million deal that matches the British transfer record. The move reunites the Argentine World Cup winner with his former Chelsea manager, and he has been handed the number 17 shirt at the Etihad Stadium, a number previously worn by club legend Kevin de Bruyne.
Fernandez's departure left Chelsea scrambling to find a direct replacement before the 11pm deadline on Tuesday, but the west London club came up empty-handed. A fully agreed deal for Monaco's Lamine Camara collapsed at the last moment when the Ligue 1 club pulled out of the transfer. Chelsea had also explored a move for Roma's Manu Kone, but that avenue was shut down after Roma boss Gian Piero Gasperini intervened personally to block the deal, even though the two clubs were reportedly closing in on an agreement.
For Fernandez, the switch brings to an end a pursuit that had defined much of his summer. The 25-year-old midfielder had made no secret of his desire to join City, and he did not hold back when discussing his motivations for leaving Stamford Bridge. He pointed to City's status and pedigree as the driving force behind the move, describing his new employers as "the most successful club in England in recent times."
"Every player wants to be part of a club like this because everyone knows how well-run City are," Fernandez said. "I could not be happier to be here, and I am ready for the challenge of helping City continue winning trophies. This is a club built for success. If you look across the squad, City have quality in every area. I want to learn from my new teammates and become a better player."
He also took the opportunity to reflect on his time in west London, revealing that being at a club of City's stature had long been an ambition. "I always dreamed of being at a club as big as City," he said. "I'm grateful for the opportunity. It's a very emotional moment for me and my family, to take this step at 25 years old, in a football career that I always dreamed of. I'm so happy to be here, enjoying these first few hours I've had at the club."
Fernandez joined Chelsea in January 2023 for £107 million and went on to help the club lift the Club World Cup, but he never competed for the Premier League title during his time at Stamford Bridge, despite Chelsea's superior Champions League pedigree over City in recent history. That contrast appeared to weigh on his decision to push through the move.
The midfielder's arrival forms part of a hefty midfield rebuild at City this year, following the club's earlier signings of Elliot Anderson for £116 million and Ayyoub Bouaddi for £85 million, taking City's combined outlay on midfield reinforcements this summer to around £326 million. "The team City are building this year is incredible, and it makes me really happy that they are going in that direction," Fernandez said.
Asked about his relationship with his former Chelsea manager, who played a key role in bringing him to the Etihad, Fernandez expressed gratitude for the efforts made to get the deal over the line. "We were both very eager for it to happen, because it wasn't easy for me to be here today," he said. "But I know he also made a big effort, speaking to the club, and I'm grateful that he did that. It was a long few days, but in the end I'm here and I'm very happy to be joining this club."
Explaining his choice of the number 17 shirt, Fernandez said it held personal significance. "It's a number I like," he said. "It embodies me. It was my first number in the national team, so I'm very happy to choose this number." The shirt has a storied history at City, previously worn by De Bruyne for a decade, as well as by Sun Jihai, Martin Petrov, Jerome Boateng, Michael Johnson and Jack Rodwell.
