West Ham United secured a much-needed victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Championship, with teenager Divine Mukasa scoring twice in a match that briefly lifted the pressure on manager Nuno Espírito Santo.dropped into English football's second tier, both clubs are still searching for identity, and Saturday's contest offered a scrappy but eventful spectacle that ultimately swung West Ham's way thanks to clinical finishing.
The home side struggled for the first half-hour before finding their rhythm. Mukasa opened the scoring with a stunning 25-yard strike that cannoned in off the underside of the crossbar, capping a slick move that saw Kyle Walker-Peters slip in behind the Wolves defense. Seven minutes later, West Ham doubled their advantage when Joel Piroe's quick footwork drew a rash challenge from André, allowing Jarrod Bowen to convert from the penalty spot.
Wolves hit back before the interval. A deflection off the unfortunate André fell into space for Marshall Munetsi, who cut inside Konstantinos Mavropanos and slotted a composed finish past goalkeeper Mads Hermansen to reduce the deficit to 2-1 at the break.
Any hope of a Wolves fightback was extinguished early in the second half. Mukasa struck again after a clever passing sequence involving Bowen and Pablo, whose dummy took four Wolves defenders out of the play. Mukasa received the ball at the edge of the area, beat Wolves captain Toti Gomes, and saw his shot deflect off the defender and past José Sá for his second of the afternoon.
Mavropanos then turned provider and scorer in quick succession. He headed against the crossbar from an Arne Engels corner before finishing the rebound on the volley to make it 4-1. However, the defender's day took an unfortunate twist just minutes later when he turned a Jackson Tchatchoua cross into his own net, giving Wolves a second goal on the night.
Despite late pressure, including missed chances from the lively Fer López, Wolves could not find a way back into the contest, and West Ham held on for a comfortable win.
Speaking after the match, Nuno acknowledged his side's shortcomings but welcomed the result. "We all know that it was much needed," he said. "Looking back even on today, we have mistakes again but we've been much more effective in our attacking actions." He also praised his young match-winner, adding: "I'm delighted by the way he played. All the young lads, not just those who joined this summer, have brought us energy and talent. There's a lot of things to improve but I'm delighted to have him."
Wolves boss César Peixoto lamented his side's inability to convert their chances despite dominating spells of possession. "We created a lot of chances to score, they scored more goals," he said. "West Ham took their chances and that's the difference."
Among the other performers, West Ham's Manchester City loanee Mukasa stole the headlines, while midfielder Engels also impressed in his side's engine room. For Wolves, full-back Tchatchoua caught the eye with contributions at both ends of the pitch, and Mateus Mané was a persistent threat down the left flank.
The result offers Nuno a brief reprieve as speculation continues to swirl around West Ham's ownership situation, with former Newcastle shareholder Amanda Staveley reportedly in attendance and seen celebrating Mukasa's opener from the stands.
